I'm thinking of going AM2 from 939 but I've been reading about the new quad core chips and I don't know if they're going to be supported by the current batch of motherboards. Will they be released for socket AM2? I'm just thinking ahead before I make my mind up!!

cheers

Yes, AMD made sure that users will not have to change from AM2 so you can get a true quad core on one chip CPU, you will however have to change if you want DDR3 support.

Make sure you get a decent board with a good chipset, from a manufacturer that has a good history of updating Bios's so Myabe an Asus board with an Nforce 570 or 590 chipset.

From what I've seen they will be pin compatible with AM2 but will just lack the power saving features and the latest HT3.0 or something like that... Should work though.

No, they will be for am2+, am2 with a power revision to support quad cores and the quadfx platform too.

Nope, AMD have stated that Agena and the likes will be backwards compatible with AM2.
AM2+ will allow for HT3.0 support and split power planes in the cpu for a more advanced cool n' quiet though most people here will turn that off.

In a single socket system AM2+ will probably offer very little speed benefit.
