Are the Q9550s rubbish overclockers?

Some ppl say they wont be too great but no one knows.

Its just cos I might be thinking to get 1, is that a bad move? Cos I was expecting to get at least 3.2 out of it.

when at the same speed, it will be faster then a q6600, however the low multipliers are what many see as the biggest letdown (i think)

It'll almost certainly do 3.2GHz on stock voltage, 3.8GHz should be easily doable on a decent board with only a small increase of Vcore.

Might join it up with a "Abit IN9 32X-MAX WiFi NF680i SLI" board if I have the funds for a new system buld that is, cos my current sys wont be any good,, see in sig,

Save yourself over 100 mate and get a Q9450.

Plus that mobo 680 is not a good choice for clocking quads especially the 45nm parts.

avoid 680i chipset unless you want endless greif

probs best looking at x38 unless you want sli ,then its 7series chipsets for you

what top end motherboard would u recommend then? cos I will be keeping the board/system for at least 3yrs, so its going to be seeing a few graphic cards

edit: memory slots must be well away from cpu, cos will be using a freezer.

I managed 500*8 with my Q6600 at 1.5v and additional motherboard cooling to cope with the increase nb,pll/gtl voltages. So I’d like to think I could achieve the same level with a yorkie. That would run a Q9550 at 4.25ghz with slightly lower vcore.

Shame I couldn’t justify the extra dosh it cost to purchase one, let alone afford one :(

So the 680i boards deff wont work with a Q9540 or Q9550, cos Im trying to make it future proof, cos if I get this system It has to last me a good 3yrs, and the board needs to take whatever I thow at it.

Yorkfield quads are supported on the new nF 700-series SLI motherboards, not the old 600-series. Unless you plan to run SLI I recommend not going down the Nvidia route.

I personally reckon there not going to be that great FSB wise... My QX will only do 470FSB maximum.. I know its the cpu thats the limit as the board will do 560FSB with my E8400..

470 was pretty much my limit on my Premium until I paid extra attention to chipset cooling and bios tweaking. Nothing specifically relating to these new yorkfields, all intel quads are tougher on the board and less likely to match a dual cores max fsb or even get close. If you have a QX its not to much of an issue with the unlocked multi :)

Definitely won't work!

It will boot with 680i, but the speed fluctuates randomly. Highly unstable.

780i will work, my opinion is to go with P35/X38 though.

470FSB is pretty normal for the QX. The Q9450 and Q9550 samples have had the same FSB wall, but for some reason the Q9300 goes higher.

We will just have to wait for the retail launch to find out for certain.
