Can someone have a look at these numbers and tell me are they any good?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 13.7 db 24.0 db
Noise Margin 25.0 db 14.0 db

Moved into my new house a couple of months ago and was pleased to see the line speeds. When I ran speed tests on my ISPs site, I was getting download speeds of about 2000-2300 kpbs.

But tonight downloading seemed faster, so I ran the speed tests again and got 22301kbps. Thinking that might have been dodgy I ran it three more times, and got 31467, 33166 and 30681kbps.

Do those download speeds look ok for the line stats, or do they look messed up? What sort of connection do you reckon I actually have? (It feels to me around the 2meg mark tbh.)

Very good indeed. If you ever get adsl2+ you can expect 20mbit+ downstream.

Hmmm. See thing is I'm quite a way from the exchange. Too far to get more than a 2meg connection as far as BT say. That's why I'm aa bit dubious about the test results

Gonna try the ADSLGuide speed test, see what that comes back with.

But the line attentuation and noise margins are good?

Assuming those values are accurate then you would be fine for 2Mbps. If the checker says you aren't, a competent ISP can easily have that changed.

Getting roughly 3 times what your connection's capable of? I'd say that was dodgy.
What speedtest were you using?

Assuming they're accurate, they're excellent.

Was using the speedtest from my ISP.

Ran the ADSLGuide test a few times - it says my speed is around the 2.3-2.5meg, which seems to make sense.

Tolien - not sure I get what you mean when you say a compentent ISP can have that changed?

"as far as BT say" = what www.btwholesale.com/getbroadband says. What it says is based on a database entry. An ISP which isn't staffed by idiots can get the database entry altered.

2.3-2.5Mbps is pretty low given you're synching at 8Mbps (expect ~7.2Mbps of IP throughput at best though).

You actually have an 8Mb connection - it says so in the stats. That means your max IP data rate is around 7.1Mbps.

The fact you're seeing 2Mb speeds could be due to a stuck profile, crap ISP, congestion at the exchange or a combination of those. I'm assuming your 22-33Mb speedtests were typos?

There are a few tests you can do to see where the problem lies - BT Speedtester Login being the starting point to see who the problem lies with, then various sites to see if your exchange is reckonised by BT as being unusually busy.

Yeh, I know that's the max, that's why I said I was pleased to see it. Didn't expect to get more than 2meg tho from what the BT line checker said.

Nope, those are the speeds I got according to the speed test!

I'll try the BT one, see what it comes back with. Thanks for that one!

csmager, just tried the test.speedtester.bt.com:50301, got this result:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 3456 kbps

Also just ran the ADSLGuide test again, it's now telling me my connection speed is 3.9Meg (3954.9Kbps down, 375.9Kbps up) although the graph they show actually has my downstream as a little higher than the "DSL4Mbps" line.

Tolien, thanks, realised what you mean and re-checked the BT site. It does now say a max speed of 8meg.

I guess that means I'm getting between 2 and 4meg? Is it meant to vary that much?

The test says that your profile is 7.1Mbps, so the BRAS profile isn't at fault.

Your slow speeds are either exchange contention or ISP contention - most likely over their link to BT.

Run the original bt speedtester using the speedtester login (i.e. connect directly to BT). Instructions should be on the site: http://speedtester.bt.com/

Who's the ISP?

Tried to run the original speedtester like you said, but couldn't get the router to log in using the BT logonID given on the site.

Ran it using my normal logon through my ISP and got:

The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user (phone number) and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of

3191 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second.

I'm guessing it's down to being a crap ISP. Tis Plusnet afterall....
(they were good once upon a time!)
