The last result is my new seagate 7200.10, the middle result is my 250 spinpoint. Is the samsung faster? I'm trying to decide which is going to be the OS drive

i found the sata 2 jumper in the back...new results below...

HD Tune: ST3500630AS Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 38.1 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 54.8 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 52.0 MB/sec
Access Time : 13.3 ms
Burst Rate : 127.5 MB/sec
CPU Usage : 24.0%

Still seems slow

That does appear to be a bit slow, I've just tested my 7200.10 with HDTach and I get an average read of 60.4mb/s, burst rate of 130.5mb/s, random access time of 13.1ms and CPU utilisation of ~5%.

This is all on an motherboard that doesn't support SATA 300mb/s transfers so none of the extended SATA features are present here. It may be that the controller on your motherboard isn't very good. :)

it's a ds3, plugged into a yellow thing. Is it worth trying a different port?

PS thanks for that spec the other day, my parents are very happy with it :)

It might be worth trying a different port just in case or even trying HDTach to see if it is down to the software reading incorrectly.

No problems about the spec, glad they like it. :)

//edit, just downloaded HDTune to try it myself. Results are minimum speed of 37.4mb/s, max of 69.2mb/s, average of 57.7mb/s, access time of 13.4ms, burst rate of 114.4mb/s and CPU usage of 7% so yours isn't all that far off.

hd tach came up with

62.6 @ 6%
170.9 burst

and my spin point 64.9 @ 4%
130 burst.

Not much in it then. Is burst rate really that important?
