Are these stats better?

I've just fitted an ADSL Nation filtered faceplate to the master socket in the hall and replaced the phone cable running upstairs to the router in my PC room with BT spec 4 core twisted pair cable, I've also removed the bell wire connection from the downstairs phone extension. I've got no idea what these figures mean.

My previous line stats as shown by the router were

SNR Margin 19.5db downstream, 6.0db upstream
Line attenuation 41db downstream, 31.5db upstream
data rate kbps 2272 downstrewam, 448 upstream
max rate kbps 6272 downstream, 592 upstream
power dbm 19.0 downstream, 12.5 upstream
CRC 5 downstream, 0 upstream

After rebooting the router they are now

SNR Margin 34.7db downstream, 12.5db upstream
Line attenuation 24.0db downstream, 13.0db upstream
data rate kbps 2272 downstrewam, 828 upstream
max rate kbps 21736 downstream, 1406 upstream
power dbm 18.3 downstream, 11.3 upstream
CRC 0 downstream, 0 upstream

Nope, you are either on a fixed 2mb service or something is really amiss with your line and you need the line card resetting, please contact your ISP to do this.

I'm with bloody terrible on a package which they say should be upto 16meg, think I'll need to change ISP because you get nowhere when you phone india about broadband problems, might as well go to the local zoo and ask a chimp to sort the problem out.

Ok SNR margin is basically how much Signal to Noise that the modem sees. High values mean that it sees lots of signal compared with the noise. Values less than 3 or 4db will give instability and dropped connection while anything over 8 or 9 is wasted. SNR will typically drop in value as you increase the line speed. Your 34.5dB suggests you can go MUCH faster with your sync speed and this is confirmed by your modem declaring it can go up to 21736 kbps.

Line attenuation is basically a value expressing the length of the line. I'm not sure exactly how it works in dB but maybe it's a signal strength value or something. The lowest I've seen is 3dB (across the street from exchange apparently) going well up into the 60s for very long lines. Your 24 dB shows that you have effectively reduced your line's length by a 1.5 kms by your changes, as it's seen by the modem anyway. Low figures are better here.

Data rate is the speed at which your modem is connected with the exchange. This is determined by some sort of handshake or in your case by probably profiling.

Max rate is how fast the modem thinks it can go based on attenuation and the signal is can see.

CRC are uncorrectable errors where the packet would need to be transmitted again by your modem. High numbers here are not good. 5 is fine in case you were wondering, unless it's only been on for a few seconds of course. When my line was bad this CRC figure used to count up into the hundreds in seconds.

I reckon your ISP has put you on a fixed 2mbit profile due to the instability of your line. You will need to get onto them and tell them you've fixed your wiring and ask them to reset your profile to something more appropriate.

which isp are you with?

Phone up and ask them to reset your target snr as you have done some internal rewiring(that's what I use to say to them to restart my training period) that should do the trick

Well the work you did was not wasted. The attenuation has gone done and the Max rate up (both a lot!)

Wait and see what happens but as other the profile may be stuck/fixed

When you phone up and speak to a useless Indian ask to speak to a tier 2 adviser or a manager, take no for an answer be assertive to what you want, ask for your line profile to be reset and don't take no for an answer, it's VERY simple for them to do and should do it.
