Are wireless access points bi-directional?

I'm trying to achieve this:

ComputerA - WiFi - ISP router - ethernet - wireless access point - WiFi - ComputerB

I've tried configuring both an old ISP router (HG533) and a raspberry pi as
wireless access points. In both cases, ComputerB could ping ComputerA, but A
can't ping B.

I don't know much about this subject, so I don't know if that's expected
behaviour, or if I've done something wrong, or failed to do something else
that's necessary.

Would a wireless access point such as TP-LINK TL-WA801ND solve this problem?

Connect the two computers using a cable and check they can ping each other before getting too involved with this. You may just need to adjust the firewall settings on one of them.

If A and B are both connected by wifi to the ISP router then they can see each
other. They both have addresses in the range 192.168.1.*, allocated by the
router's dhcp server. When B connects via the WAP, it gets a 192.168.2.*
address. I suspect that part of the problem is that the ISP router doesn't
know what to do with 192.168.2.* addresses.

Looks like your WiFi access point is giving out IP addresses, you'll need to set the access point to have a static ip in the router's ip range and allow the isp router to assign IP addresses.

If they’re getting IPs from different subnets both routers must both be configured as routers which is causing a double NAT situation.

You need to configure the second router as an access point. If it doesn’t have a built in AP mode Google ‘configure router as access point’.

I bought the wireless access point which I mentioned in my original query and it does the job. I expect the other options could have been made
to work by someone with more knowledge and patience than me, but I think the WAP is 20 quid well spent.
