Are wireless dashcams a thing?

I want to get a dashcam for a new car but don't particularly want wires trailing all over or have it professionally fitted and so thought there must be wireless rechargeable dashcams by now?

Has anyone got any experience of something like this and have any recommendations??

Buy a GoPro or similar action cam, you'll need to swap batteries every hour or two though.

You would have to recharge it after every journey. Also batteries aren't small, so the dashcam itself would be quite large.

Otherwise, yes, they exist already and are called Go Pros. The reason they aren't popular as dashcams is because it would be a massive pain to remember to recharge it every day. Batteries also overheat when the device is in the direct sun in the summer.

Cameras chew through batteries, that's why wireless security cameras and doorbells don't record all the time, they only trigger with movement, but with a dashcam you need it to record all the time while driving, so a battery camera is not practical at all

I do believe there are cameras that can be attached to other types of sensors and then that's used to trigger recording and those could perhaps be used with a battery as they don't record very often - for example connecting the camera a sensor that detects impact and that way the cameras only record if someone hits your car, I believe the cameras on Teslas are setup this way

I guess I probably will, I just thought there might be a more 21st century solution than having to have it wired but @muon 's comments make sense!
The 21st century solution is cigarette lighter and do the minor job of tucking the wire behind trim. Or you can get fuse piggyback things to hide it all away.

Just stick a 12 truck battery in the footwell and connect it, it'll record for months.

Is it worth buying and carrying around the battery though? May as well just pay an installer to do the wiring properly, plus if you're not recharging the truck battery and only draining it then you're probably damaging it as well, they're not lithium ion? You can get a big lithium ion battery though, with a UPS, but again, very expensive and not worth it

He was either being facetious or he has been drugged by the old lady he is stalking about cyber security.

no I think wireless dashcam would be a good idea - especially for rear ones where you'd avoid running a datacable that interferes with (20the Cenury?) DAB ,

having Headuinit support to directly show image would be useful (Android Automotive?) would carplay/AA render a high quality image

but battery is the problem - if you want sentry mode with some autonomy (maybe need multiple 360 cameras for it to be any use) need a liion that can be recharged fast when car is being used (one of those 6C's ?) like the very expensive blackvue battery units.

Cable interferes with DAB? you what mate.

Yeah i love watching the screen in my car when im either driving or the car is parked. Oh wait.

Dashcam with a feature to record when you are away from the car. What is this 30th century thinking jpaul, you are a step ahead of us all. For such situations i reckon a large amp hour 12V battery somewhere in the car would be ideal but im not sure how well i could hide it it on the windscreen so insteadd ill remote mount it an use ..... wire to power it. Hows that for following orders, Harry Pope and the order of common sense.

#critical thinking.

for afterfit dashcams many people experience interference with dab ! so wireless data comms avoids that.
live view of camera maybe useful if you haven't got reversing camera, but yes in general wouldn't want to see the live front view (unless providing some enhanced mage recognition .. like there is a police car behind you)
'wireless' a la wifi ? like many home devices, so just data comms, where where they still connect into local power supply like battery hidden in dash/bulkhead

Never heard of that, the BMW Eye 3.0 that we had fitted to the X1 has never caused a problem with DAB, yes DAB drops around the Peak District area but always has on every car we've had even without rear dashcams

I'm more surprised manufacturers haven't standardised adding some form of USB power feed at the top of the front windscreen and somewhere near the rear windscreen that can just be used as a quick plug-in.

I'm aware some manufacturers offer their own dashcams now but they're usually a con for price!

The issue is that the cable for the rear camera causes interference with the DAB antenna (either in the glass or a sharkfin/aerial). Ferrite cores fix it theoretically.
