Are wireless dashcams a thing?

Never heard of that, the BMW Eye 3.0 that we had fitted to the X1 has never caused a problem with DAB
looks like a nice device ... negligible premium over thinkware device seems to be based on ... maybe a pro installer know how to avoid routing cables near sensitive devices or they have good shielding ...
how is the night time footage ? how much does an install run at ?

Never heard of that, the BMW Eye 3.0 that we had fitted to the X1 has never caused a problem with DAB, yes DAB drops around the Peak District area but always has on every car we've had even without rear dashcams

The aftermarket dashcam I had fitted to my Mazda knocked out the dab radio and they installed the rear cam wire away from the shark fin rear antenna

The issue is that the cable for the rear camera causes interference with the DAB antenna (either in the glass or a sharkfin/aerial). Ferrite cores fix it theoretically.

Ferrite cores improved the situation, but not enough for the rear cam, I've ended up just having to disconnect it and only use the front cam.

Yeah to be fair my ThinkWare from....2016 has never caused an issue on the three cars I have had it fitted.

I do believe there are cameras that can be attached to other types of sensors and then that's used to trigger recording and those could perhaps be used with a battery as they don't record very often - for example connecting the camera a sensor that detects impact and that way the cameras only record if someone hits your car, I believe the cameras on Teslas are setup this way

Wouldn't be much use in a crash though, other than to potentially get the number plate in a hit & run. All you'd end up with is the aftermath of the impact, rather than any indication of what caused it!

like there is a police car behind you

If you're already distracted enough that you fail to notice a police car behind you, then any further distractions are the last thing you need!

I'm more surprised manufacturers haven't standardised adding some form of USB power feed at the top of the front windscreen and somewhere near the rear windscreen that can just be used as a quick plug-in.

I'm aware some manufacturers offer their own dashcams now but they're usually a con for price!

I saw at least one car that had this when I was shopping around a couple of years ago, I think it was the MG ZS EV?

Sounds like the Chinesium cameras arent meeting EMC standard to me.

Agreed - never had an issue with my Nextbase camera, across 3 different cars using the DAB radio in both aftermarket Android and stock Kia headunits.

Sounds like a cheap dashcam/headunit/poorly shielded cable problem rather than an inherent concern with running a cable to the back of the car.

Footage is good, can make things out well just glad we've never needed the footage (yet) though, think it was £400 inc vat all in, seems a lot but when you've splurged on a new motor it's not a lot in the grand scheme of things

£400 'all in' sounds a good deal for device + install for something providing sentry mode and battery management .. if a bmw dealer were offering that at purchase point might be hard to refuse.
labour must be 2-3 hrs.

Ironic given NextBase are one of the few installers with an actual article about it.

It is less about the camera (altho you're probably right in the spirit of your message) and more about how crap the car DAB has been installed. Sharkfins better than integrated into rear glass.

My 2021 Leaf has at least four cameras built in and I am sure many modern cars are the same yet I feel manufacturers have missed a trick here. With the addition of a piece of software so that we have the ability to gather all the camera data and record it to a SD card (a lot of modern cars already have a slot for one) they would have built in dashcams on their cars instead of fitting third party camera's and hiding loads of cabling.

I want to get a dashcam for a new car but don't particularly want wires trailing all over or have it professionally fitted and so thought there must be wireless rechargeable dashcams by now?

Has anyone got any experience of something like this and have any recommendations??
Took me 10 mins to fit mine and hide all the wires.

I used to get that on the GT86. Everything interferes with ******* DAB, it's crap. If you fit LED bulbs in the car that can knock it off as well.

Most cars are a hodge podge of parts bin crap outsourced to the cheapest provider so a lot of gear is totally not integrated. It's why other car companies have found it difficult to compete with Tesla on a features front (Tesla records all cams in exactly how you describe because the full stack is integrated).
