Are you a specialist?

I'm an engineer. But I specialise in PLD Verification. I believe that because of the industry I work in that a lot of my skills are transferable to other disciplines of engineering within my industry.

Enterprise Data Warehousing Architect, I think that's quite a specialist role..

There is specialisms within it though so where do you draw the line?!

Over the years I've drifted more into Claims / Reinsurance accounting, a very minor niche that is present in some, but not all, insurance companies.

Yup moved into a 'specialism' within IT over the years from being a generalist.

There's no right or wrong answer as to whether being a specialist is good or bad, will be different for everyone and each role.

Personally it's always been good to be 'T shaped' with skills (apologies for the business bull poop lingo!).

Have a breadth of skills at a high-ish level but with deeper skills in certain areas.

I'm fairly specialist in what I do and in the industry where I work. Although I'm a programme manager, and i do a lot of project management that is fairly generalist skill. However, in the field I'm in, I am regarded in my industry as a subject matter expert as it is fairly niche area within the industry. For example I have been asked to present at various government organisations, foreign embassies, and present dozens of times at numerous industry events which surround the specialism in the industry I'm associated with.

I didn't choose this field, but I seem to be good at it.
