Are you using non-VMWare Virtualization in prod/serious testing?

What were you testing and what version Xen?

Whatever was the latest from Xen at the time, it was 6 months ago now. Actually we were using a Beta of the next version as I recall.

We were testing it for virtualisation of less busy servers, particularly dev boxes. It simply didn't have the features ESX did and despite their marketing about how lightweight the hypervisor is, it's slower even in their own tests. Price difference wasn't enough to concern ourselves with so ESX was better in every respect, added to the fact our backup software and SAN vendors explicitly support ESX.

We use Xen (3.1) in production to provide basic Linux VMs. It offers great performance + isolation. Having said that, KVM will take it's place soon with a major benefit being that it's part of the mainline Linux Kernel.
Possibly going OT but I was reading this page just yesterday: Prediction: Citrix will drop the open source Xen hypervisor for Hyper-V. The rest of the open source world drops Xen for KVM. - plenty of ifs & buts, light on facts but it does make an interesting read..
