Had my MBP since march, still running snow leopard.

I used to just make sure the sound was set to mute when I shut down so that I didn't get the booooong chime when I booted up the next time.

But something's changed lately, possibly with the last set of updates that got pushed out, and now no matter what I do with the sound before shutting down (muted, turned all way down, headphones in) it still bongs away when I next boot up.

Was trying not to use any kind of app to do this but might have to now, has anyone else seen this behaviour change on their machine?

*agrees* ALT + CMD + P + R. Let it reset and chime 2 or 3 times as well before letting go. Shouldn't need it but I always advise that people do anyway.

Once that's done, then turn the sound down and restart..

Tried that soundprefpane thing, it turned the chime off. But them unmuted and removed the app and the chime is still gone lol, so something is messed up.

Will try a PRAM reset soon.

The chime is so annoying. What's the point of it? I hate turning my computer on at night as I have undoubtedly left the volume up high and it wakes people up.

The chime is to indicate that the Mac has passed the startup diagnostic tests.

Some PCs do the same after POST, but make a much less elegant "BEEP!".

Do I really need to know if my Mac has passed its startup diagnostic tests everytime I start it from cold though. Sure, it'd be useful if there was something wrong and I wanted to run it in some kind of Mac Safe mode but surely I know it's working okay if it just does its stuff and loads OSX. Seems a strange and unnecessary addition by Apple on what is an otherwise well polished experience.

I'd hardly call the chime anymore elegant than a beep too lol, they both grate on me.

It's been there since 1984. I doubt Apple will remove it just to placate yourself.

Cope with it.

I also can't remember the last time I booted my Mac from cold, probably the last security update that forced me to reboot. Use sleep mode.

why do u even shut it down, mac's have the best wake from sleep its almost instant

It's still wise to restart them from time to time even if you do leave them to sleep.

Also, there are some people that just like to have their system shut down when not in use...generally I prefer to do that so no-one switches off the power source in my absence and messes anything up.
