Having recently upgraded to dual dual-core opterons (265s - 4 cores :)), I'd thought I'd return to the fold of crunching (F@H) for OcUK. I used to crunch SETI back in the day when Boinc didn't exist and I was at university, but then I couldn't justify the cost and the leaving the computer on all the time thing. However, with me moving to NY for 6 months, that's changed! I'm not paying the bills, so this stays on all day and night :)

However, the factor I hadn't counted for was the heat. This box is now kicking out enough heat to rival a small radiator (there's a laptop sitting on top of it, also crunching), and it's battling fiercly with the rather large aircon on the other side of the room. This is making for an interesting microclimate in the middle.

Anyways, if I survive this madness, I'll be glad to be helping out on the F@H team. :)

Welcome to foldy madness:D with that kind of power you should make a heathy impression on the charts:)

If you leave a bowl of water next to the opty with all that heat on one side and cold on the other, you might get rain!

LOL @ rain you need to *somehow* get some clouds first then it could well work ;)

As for the heat, im 64c underload while F@H! Thats @ stock no OC :(

Damn 3D Cooler "Pro", thought these were meant to be good HSF's

My X2 was touching 56 degrees until I switched out the stock HSF for a Freezer 64 Pro and cleaned some fluff out of the case, since then it's got no hotter than 44 degrees even though we had quite a hot day yesterday :)

Thankfully, my case is large, steel and matt black, so it's a rather good radiator :) I'd guess the case is around 40-50 to the touch, all over, though it does have 3 scsi drives and a Sata in there as well. Airflow isn't great :)

I have a CM Stacker which has the grill-style blanking plates and a large grill in the base - all of which were fairly well clogged with dust, all in all the system itself was pretty clean so the case had stopped most of the dust

A quick going over with the bristley attachment on the hoover sorted out the grills - even sucked all the dust out of the foam inserts in the blanking plates :D

Like yours my case was quite warm to the touch - it's now nice and cool

CM Stackers are just hoovers. I can clean mine out and within a week there's dust on the front again. Mind you, my house isn't the cleanest in the world, so I guess that's partly to blame. Can't fault the airflow though - I have five disks in one, and the average temp of those is 30C.

I try to avoid crunchers going above 50C, save for the Mac Mini and the laptop over which I have no control.

Always throw away the side panels on my cases.

Makes for good airflow and I can monitor the dust build up daily. :D

And the wifes new kitten loves laying in the bottom of my Opty case soaking up the warmth. :p

Same with my C5. Every week i have to vaccume the dust out the front of it and the inside still gets dusty.

I can't wait till scotland gets colder again, my room is stupidly hot with my pc running all the time. At the moment i'm having to keep my window open a fair bit, which results in lots of noise from a nice big round about. The things we do for folding :p
