easy to check, get linux live cd, start up from live cd and see if you can see the hdd that way, if you can see it and browse it, then its just the system, if not, then u gotta send the hdd for repair.

Right the latest....

Linux live disk could see the disk partitions but couldn't mount due to unclean dismount

So i've put the vista disk in, it is currently attempting a repair! so fingers crossed the disk is probably ok, it might just be that vista has probably mucked up a bit after a bad shutdown in sleep.....
 
The very very latest, vista has appeared to have fixed itself! get in!

....it had me scared for a bit there! I think i haven't set the sleep/hibernation modes properly so it just crashes, hmmm ill try and sort that out another time though!

Just disable them if they cause you issues, they might go into hybernation naturally if you leave it long enough, depends how the system is setup.

Not sure about vista, but I know if you boot from the XP CD, goto recovery console. then use the commands, FIXMBR and FIXBOOT, this has solved a number of similar issues where the boot sector of the HD was corrupt, and saved a full re-install.
