Hi,

I have been selected to be a radar operator (desk job) but I have been asked to attend and pass an appointment with occupational health first, I wear glasses, and am a little overweight. I have joined a gym as well. This is my dream job, will I pass do you think? No other problems recorded on my medical record

I would think wearing glasses won't stop you getting it. The fitness may, you need to find out what fitness level is required and go for it in the gym. Only you can do that mate. :)

Will you be military or civilian?

Being in the forces = military.

There are combatant and non-combatant roles however, which I think is what you mean.

Radar operator implies non-combatant, in which case your fitness/eyesight shouldn't matter as much but still make as big an effort as possible. Work hard at it and keep a record of bodyfat% and other fitness stats so you can show your progression (and thus enthusiasm for getting the job) if they ask for it.

How fat are you?

Yes, but he didn't say he was in the forces.

As he will be a civilian, the medical test will probably just be standard eyesight, hearing, that kind of stuff, just to make sure that he can operate a radar. Nothing like the basic fitness test that the military have to do, i.e. BPFA, CFT, MST etc.

If you join the Army you are in the military. It doesn't matter if you're a teacher, chef, cleaner, whatever. You're still in the military but are just non-combatant. The same goes for the other armed forces.

Sorry for being such a pedant but I can't stand seeing words used the wrong way. It's not just me either, they won't take kindly to you saying that to them in an interview/whatever.

You're right though the bar will be lower than the combatant tests, but still make sure you are generally fit. Try to keep a record as I said, this will show you're trying and are eager to get the job.

Im currently going through recruitment if you want some help.

What specific job have you gone for? Is it Radio Systems Operator??

If so that is the Signals and you will have to attend Phase 1 training like normal infantry before doing your job specific training in phase 2.

I think the run time for the signals is 1.5 mile in 12 and a half minutes.

Civillian military

Preety sure that Civ. Millitary people dont have to pass the fitness requirments as they arent expected to fight.

However for details on fitness see http://www.armyjobs.mod.uk/RegularArmy/Requirements/GetFitForTheArmy/Officer/ I know this is the officer link but thats from my bookmarks it is slightly harder than the soldier standard so a good target to aim for.

If however it turns out this job is military (non civ). You will have to pass a BPFA (under 10.5 min mile and a half, 50 press ups , 50 sit ups (both in 2 mins or under respectivly).

Good luck.

EDIT: Check your BMI out too as if you say your chubby that could be a show stopped before you loose weight or gain muscle (if your fully grown height wise that is!).

Under 10 and a half minutes, your way off mate.

If its military and signals which i expect it is then he will have to pass the ADSC course.

He will have to run the mile and a half in under 14 minutes (Signals are slackers :p )

Carry 2 x 20kg jerry cans over a set course (If you drop them you fail selection)

Heaves - Best effort

Best site for fitness - http://www.armyfit.mod.uk/
