Just a quick one, hopefully someone will know the answer :)

I have just acquired two army ration packs from a friend, one being corned beef hash and the other chocolate pudding. Both of them have a WFL date of Jan 2004, will these still be safe to eat?

Cheers,

Craig

Some military ration packs have a shelf life of upto 30 years.

Depends if "WFL" is a eat by or produced in date.

all ORPs (Operational Ration Pack) have a shelf life of at least 3 years.

And they're still not going to do any harm if you eat them after their use by date.

They have no sell by date do not eat them if they are inflated thats the only time preety much.

They have a packed on date or code rather than a use by.

Beans all the way tbh!

pfft. I did that at Leeds festival 2004.... NEVER again, You definitely don't get the nutrition you need from Pot Noodles(Only had chicken flavour too!) and Baked beans, and with a hell of a lot of booze. Don't think I could have felt more rough if I tried lol.

Cheers for the replies :) I am going hiking this weekend so will give them a sample!

Also cheers for the link Ghosteh, ill be getting one of those for the meet :)

Craig

Edit: Wow, cool new edit box. Back on topic: Ghosteh what is the difference between the link you posted and these http://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr408.html packs? They look the same to me, just a different picture.

Rat packs are pretty rank to be honest, all so a word of advice from someone who has been there make sure you eat absolutely everything! Half the contents is designed to block you up and the other half to relieve you so if you don't eat a good mix of everything you will either be going to the loo a lot or not going at all neither of which is good.

Not a great idea for camping either the calorific values are all wrong these are designed to keep a soldier on the front line going and provide far to much energy for people sitting around a campfire drinking beer. If camping get some real food, if hiking plan you route better (Pubs are essential) if fighting a war take rat pacs and trade with the locals!

First off ration packs are lovely. I'm sure people think it is all dehydrated powder or something. It's really good stuff - especially the Hotpot and Casseroles...mmmm..

As for the calories it's only all wrong if you use the whole lot in a day. That would be 3 meals, dessert, all the buscuits, chocolate, pate, sweets and possibly even the toiletpaper/tissues!

When I use them I can make one last several days/camping trips. I take one of the ration meals with me on a hike so when we stop for lunch I can be eating Lancashire Hotpot within 10 minutes while others are eating their cold cornbeef sandwhich :D

The brew kit you get with it can last a LONG time and is something I take everywhere with me :D

EDIT: You are also best off buying them in bulk off eBay. I got 10 ration packs for around 45-50 quid a year or two ago.
