Army rations

So in closing, rations are good.

Where in Snowdonia are you going exactly?

You fill me with confidence! :D

We're walking across the Glyders on the first day and then up the Pyg track up Snowdon the next.

I also seem to be one of the few who actually like the tin of pate, goes well with the biscuit brown :(.
This man knows good food i love the pate and biscuit browns :) some of the desserts can be a bit ewww though

Wayfarer meals are the best tasting I think, but they're not dehydrated so are very heavy. They're also quite expensive, but everyone in my D of E group had them for 4 days.

The army ration packs and a few brands of dehydrated foods are quite good now, but there are a few brands (or particular "meals") which are just disgusting.

I don't know about the new menus, I'm still living off 5year old ration packs every 2nd weekend, they have best before 2003 stamped all over them but they still taste great.

Ration packs are wonderful things, they're so light, easy to prepare the meals and they pack about 10000calories into those little boxes or something.

if you want to be fancy, you can mash up the oatmeal block, some of the hot chocolate and a bit of hot water together - chocolate porridge!*

*may not actually be anything like chocolate porridge.

I use to have to eat these all the time in the 80's, no doubt they have come on a long way since then.

I remember the first thing to always be eaten within minutes of getting them was the Mars bar! :p The biscuits in the green packets were hard as rock, but nourishing and it was pot luck as to what meat dishes you got in the cans.

I wonder if you still get the minute amount of toilet paper in the modern ones.

Well we have come home a day early. We intended to camp on the Watkin path tonight but we got as far as Crib Goch from the Pyg track and with 70mph winds we just coulfdn't continue. Visibility was right down due to fog and it was raining. Stood at the top of Crib Goch was mighty scary with the mini hurricane like wind trying to whip your feet from beneath you!

All this means we only got to use two lots of ration meals. Last night we had Lamb Curry (Wayfarer) with MoD rice. As my first ration meal I must say I was rather impressed, despite there being a distinct lack of lamb. Sausage and beans were for Brekkie this morning (Army surplus), you got decent portions and they tasted good too... I suppose anything does when you're sat half way up a mountain freezing your ass off though!

I did something really special too...

Pulled over to look at the scenery and with my long bonnet I failed to see the little stump in front of me. When I pulled out the bumper went over the stump which resulted in my bumper being wrenched off. I had to cram it into the back seat (not easy considering you can hardly fit a crumb in there. ROy (pictured) and I couldnt help but laugh, it was either that or cry.

That's the point. they taste quite different when you're sitting in the living room at home (but bearable if you're a student and there's nothing else).

Unfortunate about the wind and the bumper :(

Climbing Snowdon via Grib Goch is crazy at any time of year - never mind February. Still at least you had a good time :D

Was that photo taken near Pen-Y-Pass? Further down the Pass [going towards Llanberis] you can see a small white cottage on the left at the top of a field. That field is usually where I camp [if anyone watched the Gadget Show on CH5 a few weeks ago you would have seen it - some guy tested some cameras there].

If you walk up past the house and keep going up, past a hump, up a steep arse rise that has waterfalls [yep, that steep] on the left you eventually come to a really nice lake. It is only small but a lovely spot. It is called Llyn Glas [I believe - need to check map] and it should have been visible from Grib Goch. In fact it is on one of the alternative routes up/down snowdon. There is a small dip between Grib Goch and Grib Y Ddisgal [sp?] which is how you get down to it.

But yes, I love Snowdonia I have been going at least once a year since I can remember - going again in April :D

Yes it is the road to LLanberis, I will have to check out this spot you're on about next time we go, which will be in Summer.

I ate MANY of these when at College. We were either on expedition or on Army Youth Team events every other month. They were great imho. 5 of us lived on them for 4 days while we did the Wolds way also. Boil in the bag jobs on the Trangias, lovely jubbly. The beef paste needs to be thrown away at the first possible opportunity :D

i will be doing snowdon in the next couple of months. i have not decided what route to take yet.
can you wild camp around snowdon?

There are lots and lots of camp sites around Snowdonia so there is no real need to wild camp. However I have in the past camped in a few odd places that weren't part of any recognisable camp. At least no one came asking for any money first thing :p

I don't think you're supposed to be camping in National Parks. It's only because there is the concern that you will litter the place, burn down the area or destroy some sensitive habitat. So long as you know what you're doing and you leave everything as you found it though you should be fine... just be sure you did like we did and find somewhere nice and secluded ;)

We had them on our Duke of Edinburgh Gold hike.

They're good for the most part.

NO WASHING UP :D It's beyond excellent.

They're ok tasting. DO NOT.. I repeat, DO NOT eat the dumplings. I have no idea what they are, but they disintegrate in your mouth and just get stuck.

Nothing is brilliant, but they're very simple, easy and quick which is always appreciated.

I agree although i think i traded mine with one of my cadets and got it down my neck as quickly as possible before they realised what they had done :p
