Spotted this and thought it would be the perfect present for my little girl.
Angry birds on a big screen and Skype video for when I'm away. Job done!

No.

These cheaper devices do not support Android Market. It looks like I am going to have to hack it to death just to get Skype on there. Not amused!

There is also anecdotal evidence online to suggest Skype just isn't going to work properly either. My fault, I shouldn't have assumed.

Has anyone got Skype working on one of these before I waste hours on it? I am tempted to take it back and just get the Galaxy like I knew I should have. At half the price, I thought I'd take a punt on it though :(

Also, any other options for video calling on Android?

I have bought the kids the Archos 70 internet tablets that are effectively the Arnovas. To get the market took all of 5 seconds to install arctools, which installs the market and other google apps for you. Skype works fine on the Archos, which had half the ram, do I don't see why the G2 wouldn't work really well.

[edit] oh I see, you do need a custom firmware with the arnova, to be honest, like the Tegra 2 Vega, these cheaper tablets do need some hoop jumping before they reach their potential of good VFM.

If you want hassle free, get an iPad, or a premium Android tablet, although if its for a young kid, Apple do provide the simplest interface.
