That is actually a very tidy car! I rushed and bought a very cheap Ford Cougar a few months ago. Turned out to be a shed and cost me a fortune in the end. Had to sell it for £200 as scrap value really. Bits were dropping off and the HG went. I want to do this correctly and put some reaserch into buying the correct car. I plan to keep it a couple of years. £2000 is maybe peanuts to some, but to me its quite a bit to waste on a car I wont enjoy.

Its not all about looks, but it does play a part. I have looked at a few not actually driven them! Guess I need to really as I am only basing my views on looks rather than how they drive. Which I guess is very wrong.
 
If you want to do it properly, heed Fox's advice above. Probably also not worth taking your girlfriends opinion too seriously - women tend to focus on image and not much else, your priorities should really be a bit different.

Very true indeed. She has played a part in what I have posted about looks! I wont take her opinion ;) Need to be a man and do it on my own Ha!
 
Buying 2 grand cars is a massive pain, I reckon for every decent one out there you will find 4 crappy nails. Give yourself the best chance by being realistic about what matters to you.

Put it a bit nicer than I did :D At 2k, theres so many potential lemons on the market.
 
Absolutely. I may have misinterpreted but it sounded a lot like you quite like the Saab, asked her about it and it was suddenly a "no way". While its not necessarily the best option here, it's one of many that are worth considering and you should buy the car that's going to do what it needs to do and worry about keeping her happy later. It's not like she'll leave you if you bought a Saab or a Volvo!

Very good advice :) I am going to throw what I said previous about looks and focus on the stuff that matters. So much out there though, I need to start driving some cars and focus on dynamics and drive! Spent all weekend looking at the sub £2k motors on AT but I cannot visit every car and drive them all. Really is a mine field.
 
Yeah 144k miles and ropey condition - if that's the sort of signum 2 grad buys then definitely look elsewhere
 
I believe the 2.2 direct engine has some rather expensive (relatively) common problems going by the vectra-c owners club forum.

If you really have your heart set on a Signum maybe try and find a bog standard 1.8 or 2.0 engine one. (might lose the 6 speed gearbox on a 1.8 but hardly a big deal)

Insurance doesn't usually have much to do with engine size, or even power, but the statistical likelihood of it being crashed/stolen/owned by a maniac and driven through a shopping centre etc. I could get insured on a 280bhp BMW 540i Sport for the same as some far more mundane cars when I was shopping for a new car a few months back.
 
This forum has a very high concentration of BMW fans, but its not been recommended yet.... I'm sure there's a good reason :)

You weren't willing to consider a Mondeo without leather but you'd have a BMW with cloth seats?
 
The 316 is pretty horrific, 318 not.much better but at least tolerable, 320 not quick but at least sounds right

In answer though, no as you sound like you have a very tight maintenance / running budget
 
BMWs are fantastic cars, but you are so unlikely to get anything worthwhile/pain free for £2k, it's just not really worth entertaining the idea of buying one.
