Been trying to get my head around the difference between these two failover protocols.

Does one require a cross over cable between the two routers & the other not? Do both advertise a virtual I.P address/virtual router or does the switch simply direct the traffic to the LAN I.P of the second router if the first one goes down?

Confused much :(

Out of interest, what are you studying, or is this for work? HSRP/VRRP are pretty advanced topics, if you don't know the fundamentals you'll find it very hard to learn.

The main difference is that HSRP is Cisco propitiatory while VRRP is a standard.

In my company, i make sure users can connect (we provide dual router setup) but i never get involved on the configuration side of the failover. I just wondered what the main different was, outside of the industry standard vs propitiatory
