Seems like me maxtor portable harddrive is going boobs up.

After a quick browse of this area I noticed a lot of people using HD Tune so I downloaded the Pro Trial and ran serveral of the featues.

For a start, I can't READ benchmark as it just comes up "Read Error! Test Aborted" message. I did a quick error scan and it cam up with one red block, so I decided to do a full scan:

Not impressed. I only purchased this drive on the 8th October and its already like this. Granted it does get used a lot but that shouldn't make any difference.

The reason I even noticed is that i went to move a file and it created a cycle error , bit of google means that = bad. So i've now got at least 2 files I can remove from the HDD :( No idea what else is borked yet! Luckily most of it is backed up somewhere, but this containts lots of backups too.

Any way I can fix this? Or is it a case of backup, format & return to the shop?

Either rma back to shop, or now Seagate have taken over Maxtor their RMA is usually same week replacement :)

Just had about 10 mins of issues connecting now all I get is an "Error Performing Inpage Operation".

I take it this now means that my HDD is FUBAR'd??

Managed to back up all but 12GB of Ebooks :(

Maxtors are notoriously unreliable.

Indeed. I've got a pair here that have only been running, ooh, about four years for one and three for the other. Terribly unreliable.

:)

I keep hearing this getting tossed around about Maxtors, and yet I've never had a Maxtor drive die on me. Nor have any of the machines I've built with Maxtors had a drive go down. Have I just got lucky, or is it the usual case of only ever hearing the horror stories?

I have a 320GB Maxtor External, and a 750GB Maxtor OneTouch4. Work well apart from when I stuck on XP on different laptops both drives got corrupted. No real damage done, as I have multiple backups but pita none the less.

I managed to fix my harddrive and can now access all the info on there!

start menu > Run

chkdsk f: /r

took about 3-4 hours on 160GB HDD but its all working now. However I will still be returning it to the purple shirts as I've order a 250GB portable for £8 more + a 1TB External :D
