I will soon be fitting a AMD 4400 chip with the stock heat sink and fan .

I would like to use Artic silver 5 to attach it.

Does the cooler come with an adhesive pad fixed on and if so do i need to remove it 1st and if so what is the best way?

thankyou very much

Using AS5 on a stock heatsink will gain you a loss of 1-2c at best imo. You would be much better off using an aftermarket heatsink with AS5. The stock heatsink does come with a thermal pad and is actually not too bad. The HS is where the restriction will come becuase although they are better quality than the older heatsinks they still cannot compare with a decent after market HS like a Thermaltake big typhoon or a scythe ninja.

I would try it out as is and if you find temps to become a problem then the thermal pad (after it has melted) is easiest to remove by using Isopropyl alcohol (bought from a local electronics store) or specialist 'TIM cleaner'. You would be best cleaning the CPU IHS aswell with the same stuff. Then reapply a small BB sized blob of AS5 to the centre of the IHS and re-mount the heatsink.

thanks w3 if i go for another which out of those would you reccomend and are they very tall compared to the original?

also are you saying dont bother with the as5 on the stock because its a lot of hassle getting the original sticker off?

thanks

by the way is the 4400 x2 a k7 chip cuz thats what it says the themaltake is for?

I would recommend the Big Typhoon ( I use one) as they come with a decent enough fan whereas the ninja is a passive HS so you would have to purchase a 120mm fan for it.

I personally wouldn't bother using AS5 on the stock HS simply becuase the gains you will get will be minimal. The pad is easier to remove once it has been used in my experience but either way it isn't too much hassle...just not worth it imo.

The 4400 is a K8 chip. The TT big typhoon fits it no problem.

It all comes down to whether you intend on overclocking the chip m8. The stock cooler with the stock pad is fine if you intend on running at stock speeds or even if you 'slightly overclock' say 10-20%. Once you start going higher, heat may become an issue and you would be better getting an aftermarket cooler such as the ones mentioned.

Having not tried out the Thermaltake Big Typhoon I can't comment on how good it is, but the Scythe Ninja Plus does indeed come with a 120mm Scythe fan which performs well and is completely silent.
