ArtPro 16 Battery drain issue?

Hi all

I recently bought an ArtPro 16 and there appears to be an issue with the battery drain.

From full charge, just general internet browsing/YT viewing, it used 50% battery in 40 minutes. This cannot be right, surely?

I've updated to all the latest Windows updates, all latest drivers, latest BIOS, etc and I cannot figure out what's causing the battery to drain. I've also noticed it gets super hot, very fast. The CPU was sat at 56°c idling which feels pretty extreme.

Can anybody offer any suggestions as Google doesn't really offer anything usefull.

Laptop spec:

Device name LAPTOP-7KQPD61D
Processor AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 w/ Radeon 890M (2.00 GHz)
Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.1 GB usable)
Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU (16 GB)
AMD Radeon(TM) 890M Graphics (337 MB)
Storage 181 GB of 1.86 TB used

check taskmanager and see what is running, on a fresh install I would imagine it is the AI service hammering the APU collecting all the information about you and what you are doing etc, to be helpful, remember this caned a 90Wh battery on my LG laptop very quickly, these things were quickly uninstalled/disabled.

The optimus switch as suggested, I think if set incorrectly 5080 does all the things which is not desirable you want to run stuff like YT on 890M

Perhaps check some of the video settings there are things in AMD drivers to pump up video, maxing brightness etc, probably not needed also, dynamic refresh or set 60hz for video etc.

I’ve never heard of ArtPro laptops.

Do you mean ProArt from Asus?
I say this because I have a Pro Art P16 laptop which is very similar spec to yours.

If that is what you've got, download 'G Helper' which sits in your system tray and will let you configure which power and GPU settings you want, without the crappy Asus software.

The MyAsus software or whatever the default is is terrible at deciding when to switch to the discrete nvidia GPU. Maybe you do something that wants the nVidia GPU for a moment, then go back to just browser, it'll just sit there burning power on the 5080. G Helper set to 'optimise' will disable the 5080 reliably.

It sure can Shirley. 99 watt hours at 35-40 watts, yeah that’s about right for a 16” laptop with a 5080 at minimal load.

Should be near 7-9 hours really if it is setup correctly maybe more depending on brightness levels. It should only suck down that hard if it is really being used.

You don't have much luck with laptops. The P16 is a glorious device though but it really needs to be plugged in/docked.

That battery life would be right if the 5080 is running and with the 4k screen + HX AI 9.

I don't think Armoury Crate works on the P16 ProArts yet which you would normally use on the ROGs, rather it uses Creator Hub; so control software is windows power management, Nvidia and CH.

Is CH installed ok and running/configured + NVidia control panel ?

Install G-Helper to set the DGPU profiles / disable the 5080. This does resolve it.

For context, typing this from my ThinkPad X9 Ultra 7 258v after a full-looooong day of productivity work and 43% battery still remaining (2k low power draw screen version). For gaming, I use Geforce NOW for ultra settings with no real hit to battery.

It is a total compromise though; if you want a power and performance gaming laptop then even configured to minimise power draw, battery life will be 3-6 hours. G-Helper should improve on that. OLED 3k/4K screens really do eat the battery life too.

Thank you all for the replies.

I’ve taken it to a local tech to do some testing on it - I’ll suggest your recommendations and see what he thinks.

Yeah, a little touch of dyslexia . ProArt, sorry.
The classic switcheroo :)

G Helper is your friend anyway, switch it to optimised to disable the 5080 when you don’t need it.

Don’t expect Apple levels of battery performance though. I only ever use mine for intensive workloads where I need the GPU grunt so it’s usually plugged in.
