Hi all,

I'm just calculating my finances for the coming academic year and have had some..interesting results!

Out of interest, how much did you have to live on per week/month etc?

Did you work while at uni? (More interested in answers from the 3rd year if possible) Where did you live? Halls/Shared House/With Partner etc.

Thanks :)

i've been living off my student loan for the last two years. and havent really had any system other than keeping an eye on my bank account.

first year i lived in ludicrously expensive halls and for this year i'm in a much more reasonably priced 4 bedroom student house. i suspect not drinking has helped a lot with the money though so if you're a heavy drinker then keeping a bigger eye on your finances would be a good idea

For the past year I had, overall, £250 a week to live on; for the upcoming academic year it's gone down slightly to £240 (yes it's a lot, I know).

As you're asking the question you should post your own "interesting results".

Going into second year, budgeted £70 a week and ended the year with over a grand extra savings. Had £2k to live on after rent was paid in first year, plus 12 hours a week at Jessops. Was very well off. Most students have zero financial sense. Halls in first year, and have now moved into a house with 7 mates

Worked all summer in 3 jobs after first year, am going in with a lot of money, am keeping two of them during term time and will have over £200 a week after all bills, running a car, rent; £200 purely for food/going out/disposable purchases/savings.

My total income including student loan this year (I work July to July as that's when my tennancy is) will be approx £17k. Possibly significantly more if I make sales in one of the jobs.

I am by far and away the best off student I know, mind, except those with crazy loaded parents.

Currently have just over £300 a month. Well will have, I get my first loan payment next week.

I live in a shared house and the rent is a little steep for what it is but it's all I could get. No halls for now as my first year is a foundation year and part of a college rather than the Uni itself, will be in halls next year.

Currently looking for work as well, would like to be on at least £500 per month.

My loans don't even cover my rent alone!

Rent/Bills/Food/Travel is roughly £800 per month. Then have additional project costs/materials etc on top of that too.

Live in a shared house with friends, there's six of us.

Mine is rather dire. I've just moved into halls in London, overall rent is ~£8k (51 week) and maintenance loan just under £9k so I will be relying almost solely on savings (£1.5k) until I find work.

My ideal is something like £80/monthly for the Oyster and £50/week to spend on food and drink. Freshers excluded :p

I didn't go to uni, but I remember the figures my missus gave me. After rent was paid (on a shared house) she had about £300 left for the year. Worked nights a week in a shop and had about 150-200 a week to live on from that. She actually came away from uni with more money than she went with, excluding the student debt.

Pay about £3600 a year on housing, get about £4900 (loan + grant) so have £1300 split over however many weeks I'm there. Although I get £150 a month from parents, £25 goes out from my phone contract, tenner for spotify etc. I am pretty well off compared to some students.

Also do some full time work over summer, last year I took close to a grand from working and this year I will take another £480 from working.

Still got enough to hit Cuba every weekend I bet :p

I spent so many a night in that place.

I had between 80-100 a week to spend depending on term etc. I was lucky and my old man paid my rent so had a reasonably comfortable existence.

Lived in a shared house with 9 others (was awesome) i just allocated myself a weekly allowance and pulled it out in cash at the beginning of the week. Cant spend more if you haven't got it on you after all. Didnt work, between uni work, 5 a side, gym and the misses i had no time for work plus didnt really need to.

After rent, food and all my personal expenses (including car costs) I've calculated that I'll have £35 a week purely for "fun" money, going out etc. I live in a house with my girlfriend.

Starting very soon.

Rent for halls is £5k a year.

Loan is £3575, so that puts me at -£1425 before any living costs.

Parents paid the £500 deposit so it has eased it somewhat. Also they have paid for the stuff to take such as Laptop and pots/pans and etc. So I am grateful for that.

I do need to look for a job. Might try a local pharmacy, I'll be hitting two birds with one stone.

EDIT: Do you think now is the best time to apply for jobs near the university or should I wait till I get there?

I was never that organised when I was at uni... I looked at my bank balance... and then used the credit card :o

I've come a long way since then! :p

Which of Londons delightful halls are you in?

It depends when you move there as to when you can start etc. No harm applying but if you aren't there and need to be there for an interview it'd get tricky.
