well its been a while since I played games and thought i'd give it a go again so off I go to build two games machines (his & hers!)

however getting lost with how cards compare.
Been trying to keep the price below £100 per card (2nd) (although lower is better) and I'm unsure how the cards compare, for example the 260 216sp is a good £20 cheaper than the 5770 but which is the better card? from what I can tell the 260 is but this seems wrong.
And for about half the price of the 5770 I can get the 9800GGTX+ which does not seem far off.

Thoughts?

probably be playing BF2BC, DDO etc
rest of the machine's will be core2duo @ 3ghz+ with 4gb ram.
 
I'd snap a couple of those GTX 260s up quick before they go, at £99.99 it represents pretty good value for money.

They're faster than the 5770s and they're also the later 55nm versions which ran quieter and also allowed for higher overclocks.

The only benefits you'd get from the 5770 is lower power consumption and DX11 capabilities, although having said that the 5770 isn't ideal for playing DX11 games at high resolutions.

The 9800GTX is essentially the same card as the 8800GTS 512MB albeit slightly higher clocks, however at £59.99 you can't really go wrong.
 
The a 5770 wil beat a GTX260 in most games. The 5750 is only a little slower now.

The GTX260 is a good card for £100 but the HD5770 is better ( considering the GTX260 only has a 3 month warranty I would go for another card ) . Its hard to say if its worth the extra depends on what you have to spend.

The 8800GTS 512 are decent for the money and not that much slower than the 9800gtx ( the XFX 4850 is the same price and has a 12 month warranty ) Unless your playing the very latest games at high resolution they should still perform well.

Find that site that takes all the review and rolls them into a chart. Trust me I have detailed files :p the 5770 is quicker. Have a look how many times Rroff has argued himself into a corner over this. I bet his off now trying to find a bunch off oddball results again :D


Anyway I cant belive the amount of cards in the mid range we have. This is getting silly. I think the best buys are the HD4890 and GTX460 768Mb but for the price and warranty I would be happy with any depending on the resolution.

Anyone who thinks the 5770 is even faster overall - let alone a lot quicker than a GTX260 is sadly deluded.

Anyone who thinks the massive spread of results from 20 different sites in dozens of different scenarios that I posted before are "oddball" results is also sadly deluded... (you know you can click through the other benchmarks in the same article right? which also show the same story).

At £100 per card nothing beats the GTX260 but it would probably be worth putting the little extra up and going for the 4890 (unless you want to stick with nVidia).


EDIT: I should say this is the current situation - on release of the 5770 the GTX260 was the faster card, then ATI release drivers that significantly increased its performance putting it in the lead, nVidia subsequently released drivers that clawed back the difference and put it a little ahead (something jigger seems to want to ignore) - another round of drivers could change the performance difference again but I don't think theres much more left to eek out in either cards now.

The £100 GTX260's only have three months warranty. The 4890 is miles faster and has two years. £17 well spent IMO.

You know that site that takes all the reviews and rolls them into a chart ? It has about half a dozen cards between the GTX260 and HD5770. The HD5750 is now on par with a GTX260 in the same chart. Just thought I would let you know.

You know full well. I CBA taking people through this by the hand over this again.

Find the site coupe, Ive shown you and the others several times already but if you want stick you fingers in your ears and go LaLaLa and give people misleading information thats fine.
 
Sorry Jigger, but I am certain the 260 is somewhat faster here. I appreciate the 5770's overclock well across all makes where as perhaps not all makes of 260 are as consistent clockers but if you take into consideration that a 5770 is slower than a 4870 (which is slower than a 260), then maybe you can see where I'm coming from. :)

Yeah my GTX 260s all clocked well, including the first 192 shader model one, most will do 700MHz+ on the core without too much fuss, along with decent bumps on the memory and shaders :)

Jigger, the only results I can remember you coming up with were decidedly dodgy and didn't even say what version of the 260 they were testing or what drivers :p
