Asda - Online Grocery rant

Isn't this just a tactic of the supermarkets to get rid of the stuff that people wouldn't buy because of the short date, without putting it in reduced to clear?

I'd had it both ways. I've had items that have expired on the same day of the delivery (that's a lot of use when you buy some nice Croissants for breakfast for the following days!), and I've had the same items expiring in a week. I guess it just depends on what the picker comes to first - I guess you can't expect them to be as thorough as if they were doing their own shop.

That said, I thought they'd pull the same trick with fresh meat, giving you the fattier cuts people would pass up on in the shop, but the vast majority of the meat I've had from Asda has been fantastic.

My main rant is if I order meat to a certain weight. On several occasions I've ordered some beef fillet steak, a decent amount, only for the tiniest possible bit to be delivered - I mean not even a quarter of a meal's worth, let alone enough for a family meal. What's the point? Offer me more than the requested weight or none at all!

I've had a few ribeyes upgraded free of charge by Asda to fillet steaks before. I've also never had any missing items (in around 6 online shops). Can't fault it really.

Asda have overcharged me a few times, say i placed my order on Sunday night for delivery Wednesday and an item on offer has now expired back to full price then the full price has been charged on the Wednesday morning when it has been picked.

Errm, they all do that, the "offers" are always "valid for delivery between xxx and xxx". It's not just Asda, Tesco's do that too, also I've had several Tesco's shops with the price completely incorrect, massively so.

We often get cat food when its on special offer, and order the better quality stuff and they frequently run out, whack the lower quality stuff on. It's not a problem with all of them you can send stuff back, you don't have to take anything, you don't like a date, send it back, bad substitution, send it back, etc, etc.

Bit too often lately we've had broken egg's, broken bottles. Not sure if it was Ocado or Tesco's but in the past 3 months we've had one bag leak cream all down our hall carpet, and another bag that had laundry conditioner all over a bag of veg and other stuff which all had to go back.

**** happens, that's life, can almost always save money shopping online. Easier to see all the deals quickly, frankly easier to have bulk stuff like 3 months of catfood delivered while on special offer.

The portal I use - mysupermarket warns me if I'm getting a delivery after the offer expires - or at least I think it does... I find it far better to browse on than Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's sites.

Nope, if you're getting products with short dates it's just because the picker/shopper couldn't be bothered to look for a better date/reach to the back of the shelf. They're trained to provide products with a decent amount of life on them (for Sainsbury's at least, I doubt it's different anywhere else), there is no benefit to them giving you products with short life as it just increases complaints.

I'm a supervisor in a sainsburys online department, you would not believe the planning and logistics that is involved in the entirety of a persons online order from the second it's placed to the aftercare provided post delivery, it's completely mad that more doesn't go wrong and it's definitely not in the interests of the colleagues or the company to short change any customers with poor service or bad dates etc. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them :)

I'm an ASDA homeshopping driver.

We take your money before we even set out for the day. All sales have to processed before we can download the details to our palm. Ignore what it says on the palm, there are numerous reasons why it can be different including just buttons being pressed in our pockets.

You will be paying what the receipt says, as that is what goes through the till in the home shopping department. If you have any refunds, they'll be processed by a manager as soon as possible.

Any other problems? I had a woman the other day ranting at me because some of her veg was going out of date in 2 days and we should be expected to route around for long dated stuff..

Wrong again. With ASDA, you'll always pay the lowest possible price. If you ordered a 500g piece of cheese for £1, and we gave you a 750g piece of cheese which costs £1.50 then you'd pay the £1. If we gave you a 250g piece of cheese that cost 50p, then you'd pay the 50p. Says it all at the top of the receipt.

When I have used Asda, it was all ways going out of date too quickly, next day on some items, it's quite obvious it's a policy to give the short dated stuff to online customers, I mean how else will Asda get rid of it, needless to say I avoid Asda at all cost's, I have shopped online twice with Asda and both times lots of items had incredibly short dates, never again.

I don't need to now asdas policy to know this simply is not the case, what this is a case of is either poor training or laziness from the colleague (or in some cases product shortages) and a lack of corrective action from their management.

How does Mysupermarket work? Is it an agency that buys cheapest from all 3 Supermarkets on behalf of you and deliver all 3 at once?

Nah, you pick who you want to order from, and you browse their site instead of Tesco's for example. You do everything apart from pay on their site and they send it to whoever you're shopping with for you to pay when you've got it all chosen.

It'll tell you how much your trolley would cost in the other supermarkets, and it warns you about missing offers etc (the sites do that too). I find it much better to work with though.

Give it a shot.

As for the life on products, I don't remember Asda warning me (that may be because they've never had to) but Tesco and Sainsbury's do warn you if something isn't a decent shelf life, and you can refuse it.

I complained to Sainsbury's about them sending me Cravendale milk with 6 days life left, and I got £25 in vouchers.

I still think Tesco are just that little bit ahead, but I'll order from all 3.

Do Sainsbury's charge you the same for a substitute, in the same way as Asda and Tesco?

Ordered from Asda, Sainsburys and Tesco over the years.

Asda - Used them once about 5+ years ago. Delivery turned up late. Two guys, driver and a 'manager' who was supposed to be there to help as they were busy and short on drivers that night.

Driver was very helpful (I even helped bring in the shopping) while the 'manager' was on the phone non-stop (personal call) the whole time. Didn't notice until after the van left that half the shopping was covered in Pepsi where the cans had been smashed to hell. Plenty of other items not available and useless substitutes which ended up going back.

Made a complaint against the useless 'manager' and a compliment for the driver. Refunded for almost a third of the shop.

Sainsburys - Used them about 6 times 3+ years ago but not recently. Nothing much to talk about. Don't remember having one shop turn up with all items but the substitutes were always ok (this was well before they re-designed the site for substitutes).

Tesco - Only used them 2 times in the last 6 months. Both shops turned up without any substitutes :D.

If they substitute a product with one not on a multibuy linksave you get charged extra. Well i have in the past and had bags missing. Not worth the hassle.

Ah.. maybe that's what I'm thinking of with Asda. I think Tesco sort it but Asda don't sort that... I'm not really sure on it. If this thread is still going in a day or two I might check old receipts to see if I can work it out.

Never had a problem with asda delivery. Price has always been what i expected or less and any replacements have been very similar to what i ordered and in some cases better for the same price

The pickers have thousands of items to pick, there just isn't enough time in the day to route through the shelves to pick out long dated stuff. It's not a conspiracy, it's just simple fact that you get what is close to the front. If rotation has been done properly, short dated stuff will be at the front.

I've not had any problems from the Hamilton store, Alex, however the T&C for Asda says that won't happen. You might be a bit over defensive of your colleagues, even if they are pushed for time they still seem to manage it.. they've followed the T&C for every order I've received....

Expiry Dates

10.1 The colleagues who put together Your order are carefully trained to select goods with a reasonable amount of time left on the expiry date (just as You would if You were in store shopping Yourself). However, please note that some fresh produce items naturally only have limited shelf life when they arrive in the store, therefore it is reasonable for them to have a shelf life of less than two days when they are Delivered or Collected.

Pffft Tesco are horrible , the stores are dirty , the management are idiots and the staff get treat like slaves . Always find asda loads cheaper too these days

Tescos golden years are over and they're in rapid decline IMO. Used to go there for everything but now i avoid whenever possible

As a Tesco till monkey, I refute some of those claims :p

I've been treated very well, our store is always pretty clean, and there's some good and managers, no more or less than you'd expect anywhere else. We're also on £7/hour which I believe is higher than any other high street supermarket.

Can't comment on the price though, I know Tesco aren't the cheapest, but I have a staff discount which means they are for me :D

As for home shopping, I've only used it once, when there was something like £15 off when you spent £50 on your first online shop. Prefer doing it in-person, though its more time consuming. And probably costs more for the fuel these days. Everything came apart from a 750g bag of birds eye peas, got given a 1Kg bag of birds eye peas instead. Same quality, more of them, and in one of those fancy re-sealable bags :D
