Im at uni and recently signed up to Ask4 broadband for my internet access. Its the only company we're allowed to use at my halls. Anyway, the other day the connection just went dead, completely dead. Its not my ethernet cable and its not my laptop, as I have tried a different cable and a different laptop. Im assuming its therefore some problem with the socket itself? How likely is that? What sort of solution am I looking at?

While I was in halls in my first year at Northumbria University, the private accomodation halls I had used ask4; they had around 10 days downtime in the 9 months I was there.
Get used to it IMO, they're hardly the best ISP for uptimes.. your computer / socket is probably fine.. most of my downtime was caused by the gateway crashing.. (guessing they used to run it on some old *nix box that wasn't up to the job
