Asking for a raise

It entirely depends on the relationship you have with your boss. If you can "have a chat" then do so. If you cant then its best to wait until you can raise the issue formally.

I am shockingly uunderpaid and i went to my boss and told him. He completely agreed so i am entering a formal pay regrading with his support. The point is i didnt go in all guns blazing or anything i just went in for a chat (and we dont hugely get on either, but he knows my worth). All i said was that if i was being paid correctly i needed someone to sit me down and tell me and if they did i would accept it and the problem was mine, but if they couldnt do that because i wasnt paid enough then the problem is theirs and it needs to be sorted out. All very amicable and hopefully it will work out.....

Asking for a raise i understand,But with how things are these days i doubt you will get it.

Just be great full you have a job,The way the boss will also see it...if anyone else in the company finds out if you got a raise they will all be after one which obviously they wont want.

For me this is completely false. I HATE the "be grateful you have a job" mentality. Yes, its a tough world but if you are doing a top job then a firm will not want to lose you. In the same tough world recruitment costs money and more importantly time. I would say that the upheaval of losing a top notch employee, advertising the post, hiring someone and then training them up to the standard of the person you have lost is far far more of a cost issue when times are tough.

Its far cheaper to pay the current man what he is worth.

If you cant have a chat with your boss then I would probably leave. Or just say you would like a brief meeting - but do it formally

What rubbish. Don't ask, you dont get. Plus if you left it would leave they having to pay the current rate + fees + months of training - a lot more than giving you a slight raise

And don't tell anyone if they ask you not to

My best advice to you is just to find another job, yeah it can be time consuming but it's worth it in the long run.

What are your career prospects/promotion chances in your current job?

If they are good, stay and ask for a raise, if they are bad, leave.

Yeah thats true.

I just mean that its easier if you have a good relationship with the boss and can talk in a way that isnt so formal. That doesnt negate the right to bring it up formally though.
