How long does it take for the insurance company to list you on the AskMID database? I'm not on there and don’t fancy getting stopped by a random ANPR police car. I don’t have my insurance certificate as I only insured my new car this evening around 5PM

Thanks for the reply btw, just don’t fancy getting stopped all week if I’m not on there! Police ANPR cars and vans in full force around these parts you see.

Askmid is not a real time insurance database. Furthermore, at worst, you'll be given a 7 day producer.

You'll be fine.

ANPR (at least for tax offences) is not nearly as widespread as to seem to think it is. I was not on the database for about 15 working days driving in and around central London and did not have a single problem.

If you do on the off chance get pulled over, you're insured - A quick call to your insurance company at the roadside will tell them that

Wrong. I did, exact same circumstances. Joined the M5 and got pulled after about 20 seconds. I had forseen something like this happening though, so I took the policy number and phone number for the insurer with me. The copper phoned them up, confirmed I was insured then let me on my way.

Nope. Plenty of people have had their car seized at the roadside by overzealous coppers after AskMID cockups. Also the police keep a local copy which may be up to another 7 days out of date.

If you ordered online I suggest you print off the receipt and keep it with you so that the officer can't claim "reasonable cause".

Better hope your insurance has 24/7 phone lines too. I know Direct Line close at 8pm, for example.

Ah that's good to know

Just don’t really like the inconvenience of being stopped by every police car that goes by. Does every police car have such devices or is it only fitted in the bigger motorway police units?

I have being told these horror stories

I have the certificate being sent I didn’t have the chance to print it off, there only a small company who operate a 9-5 weekday so if I get pulled after these times I guess it can get complicated?

/Wish I never got told about this website now AskMID that is mind. I would just be on my way without worrying like I am

I've had some go on the same day.

Had one that took three months of chasing up and written threats before they bothered/managed to do it. Didn't get pulled but still very annoying to know it could get flagged up.

Guess it depends where he lives.

Around mine there is a regular ANPR van in the next village and usually one or two on the M4.

They seem to have periodic crackdowns once every month or two as well, where there'll be an ANPR on a bridge every 4 or 5 junctions of the M4, then a whole bunch of police cars/motorbikes on standby (often hidden behind the bridge support), then a bunch of tatty old sheds that they've collected.

Seems to have died down a bit of late though, what with the (now ex) chief constable stopping all policing on the M4 because she was unhappy with the police funding.

Small village and town here too and almost guarantee to be some van parked up, or Subaru marked police cars patrolling.

If there's any doubt, just tell them who your insurers are, they'll phone up and confirm it and send you on your way.

That's even if you ever get stopped, which I doubt you will. Don't worry about it, you're insured and you can prove it. No problems. Less worry, more driving.

Just don’t really fancy the job getting stopped by every police car and his dog! I presumed when I posted this thread all cars have ANPR but I guess they don’t.

Anyway....

I bought a car on the Saturday, it was sat unused for a couple of months so was un-insured.

Day insured it using one of the many (now very expensive) day insure websites. It didnt show up on ask MID as insured.

Fixed it and drove it back from Cornwall to Peterborough, some 320 miles.

Went past plenty of traffic cops and had no issues.

Only the Roads Policing Unit cars have ANPR/camera systems (that is, the BMWs, Volvos, Vectras etc), not the general patrol cars (Focus, Astra etc).

in answer to the OP make a note of your insurers name and phone number and a reference number (eg policy number)

if you tell the copper that you have insurance, but only just bought it, and really are insured, the next port of call is nearly always a phone call to said insurer to validate your story.

See it on road wars / traffic cops / police interceptors all time time.

Yes that's what happens 9 times out of 10, but then you get the complete idiot copper who is hell-bent on taking your car even though your legal.
