I frequently see people throw links and articles, each from different body backing regarding Aspartame: Evil or Myth.

FSA have released a report today, done independently in a double blind study (i.e. both subjects and researcher have not a clue on sample they're testing) have essentially said

Peer Reviewed Paper said:
Using a comprehensive battery of psychological tests, biochemistry and state of the art metabonomics there was no evidence of any acute adverse responses to aspartame. This independent study gives reassurance to both regulatory bodies and the public that acute ingestion of aspartame does not have any detectable psychological or metabolic effects in humans.

I hope this will help balance out some of the myth that aspartame is addictive, is evil, it causes health damage (some even blamed it for Michael J. Fox's Parkinson's!!).

Just remember to eat everything in moderation and you'll be fine.

Uhh, isn't the main problem with Sugar "replacements" that they trick insulin response and cause Hypoglycemia regardless?

Thus utterly useless. (Sucralose is just as awkward as Aspartame)

It doesn't matter how many reports are published or how many scientific studies are made, there will always be some people who will disagree with them and will produce reports showing exactly the opposite.

A mate of mine works for Coca Cola and says he'd never drink the diet stuff!

And in the same way, I have seen what happens when you boil down coke and it turns into syrup that looks like tar and has huge amount of sugar in it... ;)

And I am Fat so I only drink diet coke with my burger and chips.. :p

A book people should read is Eyes wide open by Noreena Hertz. A fantastic book where she shows how these reports are compiled and how you should always look at the funding for them and the test group. Like the Yakult one and how it increases 'helpful bacteria' funded by the company and tested on sick newborns in Africa.

Its a great book for showing you just how balls most of these studies are!

I also read that babies that are breastfed will outperform, in all areas, those who are not breastfed. Good job I don't believe such nonsense.

I think that was proven to not be the case. Some people even perpetuate the myth that smelling food can trigger an insulin response - complete nonsense. Only eating food that contain calories (particularly quickly digested food, so not fats) will trigger an insulin response. As sweeteners are energy-free they will have no effect on insulin.

The problem with people linking/citing papers is exactly this, they have to be read critically and very carefully. Famously there was a paper that claimed to show that walnuts are beneficial to heart health. The research was funded by The Association of Walnut Growers of California :D
