My local store (non-UK) has an Acer for sale which looks awesome, so just wondered if I could have a few opinions..

  • 15" 1080 IPS screen (yes IPS, looks beautiful!)
  • Intel i7 3630QM
  • GT730 (rebadged GT645)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB 5400rpm (will replace for a Momentus XT)

Price: £693

Keyboard and mousepad also feel fine and build quality is generally very good and solid, much better than my Dell Vostro anyway.

The IPS 1080p screen looks lovely, it really does. Seems like a great deal right? :)

Aesome cheers, I do game still but not much and mainly RTS and strategy games like Total War, so I think it would be perfect! Seemed to run VERY cool too!

3.5 hours under general use isn't great, I would want 6+ personally. And the GPU is a little weak for 1080p, fine for 1366x768 though.

3.5 hours is average, and fine for me as Im hardly ever away from an outlet, its really just for use at home and if I take it on holiday I wont be working, just casual surfing and likely near an outlet anyway.

As for the GPU, like i said I only play games with little graphic requirements anyway, usually RTS, so I think the Geforce 730M would be fine for that. I currently have an ATI 6630 and its around 2-3x weaker, so the increase in power will be very noticeable for me, especially backed up by the quad core i7 as I only have an i5 Sandy Bridge now, and that is also around 2x more powerful.

Anyway the IPS screen is simply too good an opportunity to pass up, it is VERY rare on notebooks in this class (I literally don't know of another 650 quid notebook with a 1080p IPS screen) and I have a sneaky feeling that this will not be present on their models in this price category for overly long. I spend around 95% of my PC time browsing or working on my study stuff, so screen is ultimately critical for me. Plus being IPS it will be MUCH better for photo and movie viewing, as I take a lot of photos and watch a lot of Netflix.

I just found it for a lower price of £630 and ordered one, and I personally think that all things considered that this is a stonking laptop for the money! :)

Well, an update as promised. :p

I picked up the laptop today and oh my oh my oh my... the screen is simply mouth-watering, I have personally never seen a better screen on a laptop. The difference between the old laptop 720p TN panel and an 1080p IPS is just simply mind-boggling. The IPS panel is perfectly uniform, blacks are deep, colours pop out, text looks laser sharp, and the increase in real estate is simply awesome. My photos look so much better, I can't wait to do some editing in PS and Lightroom on it. Ive been using the old laptop screen for so long I'd forgotten how crap it actually was.

Build quality is also surprisingly good and solid... light years ahead of my Dell old Vostro. Yes, it-' plastic, but solid and substantial plastic, and nothing moves or rattles around. It's a nice looking machine

First thing I did was take out the default HD and put in a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB... wow the thing flies, and I am seriously impressed with hybrid SSD technology. The system boots VERY fast and is just generally super responsive. The i7 seems to crunch through anything I throw at it very quickly.

The speakers seem clear but not very loud... on my old Dell they were distorted but loud. I guess clarity is better though!

Keyboard is ok, good feedback, but my Dell Vostro was much better in terms of tactility, and I am going to miss the backlit keys. Maybe there are some DIY solutions.

I also ordered an optical bay HD caddy so I can add the 1TB Samsung drive that came with the laptop as a storage drive... making around 1.45TB of usable space, not bad for a laptop methinks!

I may upgrade to 16GB RAM but not sure yet.

I'm still moving data and installing apps so haven't had chance to game yet, but as soon as I do I shall report back. :)

I'd avoid acer for abit, the service repair centre is switching sites, and the service centre taking over ...well put it this way pray it doesn't go wrong :)

Awesomeness, just tested the Bluetooth A2DP and it streams to my soundbar, whereas my old laptop didn't. It also plays sound over HDMI, whereas my old laptop with ATI didn't. Happy as a pig in mud. Nirvana. :D

Eh? Makes no difference. A laptop doesn't magically go wrong after 1 week. If it works fine out of the box, you're generally good.

Update: it just gets better. :D

Whereas I was expecting to be able to play all of my games comfortably at 1366×768 with higher settings than before, I am pretty damn stunned to find I can play them all in 1080p with pretty much max settings, minus shadows and reflections! Needless to say, it all looks stunning on the IPS screen.

Like I said, I dont play anything ridiculously demanding, but Medieval Total War II at 1080p is a struggle for many laptops, and you can really feel the difference a quad core i7 makes. All this at the same time as blasting the sound through my soundbar via bluetooth... awesome. This laptop really has exceeded all of my expectations.

Very pleasantly surprised with this GT730m (slightly faster GT640m). Will give a shot at overclocking it soon too, should get it somewhere near to the levels of the GT650 from what i've read. :)
