I use the abobe board with an X2 3800, and a 160GB SATA drive connected to the SATA II controller and it all works fine.

I bought two 500GB WD SATA drives the other week for storage to replace some of my old 200GB IDE drives, the computer picks up the drives fine and windows found the new hardware and installed it no problem. The drives are connected to the onboard SATA I controller. As soon as I start to write data to the drives, it copies 300/400Mb and then the machine freezes completely. I have to press the restart button on the machine. The second time it did this I had to repair windows as it damaged the installation.

Any ideas? I installed the latest SATA drivers from the ASRock website.

Cheers

I had issues with SATA on the same board when I first bought my 320gb Seagate. I had a 200gb Maxtor on the SATA I port which worked fine all the time, as soon as I put the 320gb on the SATA II port the seagate would work for a short while and then grind to a halt in Windows.

If you check in event viewer (start run type in eventvwr) and check the system section it may give you some errors you can work with.

I subsequently moved the Seagate off the SATA II port and its been perfectly fine.

Personally I blame the board, its a bit flakey at times. I dont know if there is an issue when using SATA I & II at the same time, cant remember if I tried it or not.
