hi all, the beta bios users of this board to get over the htt lock, are there any disadvantages to the beat bios over the latest official bios?
i hear cold boot problems and bios not saving settings etc. is this true or just rumors?

im after a higher overclock and was wondering if the ocw2 beta bios is more hassle than its worth?

currently on bios 1.60

I'm currently using the OCWbeta2 bios and not having any problems.

I did have the problem with the bios settings at first, when loading the pc the cpu would be at stock speed and voltage even though they were set differently in the bios. It had saved the settings but wasn't using them.
This problem fixed itself the next day, I also had the same problem with the official 1.6 and 1.4 bios, so it might just be my board.

I don't think there are any disadvantages of this bios instead of the latest official bios except for the support of the newer cpus and skt AM2.

it shows the cpu as its default speed at the post screen even when overclocked. but it really is running faster so u can ignore that.
sometimes it will fail to boot up, so leave that bootguardian option ON and once u get it back, just save the settings and bootup again. tends to happen on warm boots after you told it to restart.
happens maybe 1 out of every 10 bootups, its something you CAN live with, especially those that leave their pc on 24/7.

its worth it.

just upgraded to the 1.70 bios and no difference from it and the 1.60 bios. the beta bios does not seem to be stable enough for me to consider yet. cold boot issues are not what i want to be living with and having set bios options again and again i can't be asked with it at the moment.

guess i will stick with bios 1.70 since it doesn;t have these boot issues.
hope someone mods this new bios though and removes the htt limiter.

hold on a minute, does the entire boards bios settings get reset such as mem timings etc with the cold boot issues of the beta2 bios? or is it just the cpu clock speed settings?

if its the latter then i guess it would not matter that much.

nah i find it just boots up at default cpu speed, it keeps all your other options there, dont even have to save and exit, just exit and it restarts fine. seriously just try it, its not that bad. if you do have any problems, especially when it wont come back, just reset the cmos maybe with just one dimm installed.

Im using ocwbeta2 bios and its been fine with my opteron 146, running at 2.8ghz at the moment.

Sometimes it will fail to boot but then I just press the reset button and it boots fine, no settings are reset. Also bare in mind I have done the vcore mod so the boot problem is probably in relation to that.

Otherwise I find this bios better than the official one I had, 1.6 I think, because on the official one if you overclocked something too much and it failed to post, the bootguard would then delete all the settings. On the beta bios it only resets most of the overclocking settings, and doesnt affect the hard drive settings etc, which saves a lot of time.

ok just tested the beta2 bios and no luck with it. can boot to windows at 300htt which gives 3ghz core speed but stability is crap. run snm and it bsods the pc in under 15 seconds. even tried vcore at max of 1.45 and still no luck.

since i can do 2740 at 1.275v it seems a bit iffy that i can;t do 3ghz at 1.45v.
im suspecting the bios is holding me back.

ram was even set back to 200mhz when at 3ghz speed so ram is not the problem since im currently back on the 1.70 bios now and doing 228mhz ram and 274htt for the 2740mhz again at 1.275v.

looks like if i want to go any higher its gonna be a new board job.

guess i can live with 2740mhz for a while now.

the OCWBeta2 bios is the only bios available that can go beyond the 274HTT, all asrock bios will always have a lock on the Htt to stop people going nutts with the overclocks and returning burnt boards :)

was toying with the idea of using the beta bios myself. my 146 quite happily runs at 2.74 with 1.275v as well.

seems a bit pointless messing any more just to get it 2.8 or 2.9 , surely that wont provide that much of a real world boost would it ?

would be nice to have more memory divider options though. as at present my memory is slighlty underclocked

1.275V is super low! Mine is at 1.55V and on this board is only fully stable at 2.8ghz, anything higher and it has problems.

i forgot the stepping code but its date was 0602. will check again next time i remove heatsink.

ok as for the beta bios testing im guessing i did not do a proper job of testing. what i should have done is dropped the multi and upped the gtt to something like 300 to see if its still stable at speed of 2.7ish ghz. ram is fine at 228mhz been memtested and goldmemoried for loads of hours with no errors. i suspect it may have been some other bios setting causing the problem for me but im not sure. i will put beta bios on again and give it another shot.

do you guys know what settings i should set in the beta bios since it has a few more options than the bios 1.70.

right im back on with the ocw beta2 bios. currently running at my sig speeds of 2740mhz 274 htt 228mhz ram.

this time i left the bios option of dram idle timer to enabled. last time it was disabled.

gonna drop multi and increase htt now and see what happens.
