I still feel somewhat aggrieved that the writers ceased putting any effort into the actual underlying story after BF, when they realised their skills weren't adequate enough to unpick the utterly convoluted narrative they'd woven. Aside from that, the ancient settings of more recent games doesn't appeal to me. I'll wait until next year when they release another few.

Actually a bit worried about this one, Assassins Creed Origins was my GOTY for 2017, Assassins Creed Odyssey was my GOTY for 2018 and although Assassins Creed Valhalla didnt make my GOTY for its year, I did really like it. AC Mirage worries me with its much smaller map size and move "away" from the playstyle of the previous 3 games because I was one of those people who REALLY liked the way that AC Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla were done, both in terms of scale and gameplay. AC Mirage sounds like it might be one that I will not click with in the same way.

Loved Origins, the other two not so much, though I do love Odyssey's setting as well and I actually have it installed now just for that (TBH, the settings are why I even bother with AC now). Valhalla was definitely the worst IMO. Origins had the best setting, protagonist and the most sensible story overall.

The story can't be saved at this point, it's just a hot mess, but if this one is more like Unity, then I'm in. Going back to the roots with huge crowds, proper parkour, focus on stealth and actual assassinations should turn out well if they don't screw it up. A smaller, denser and more detailed location should work in its favour after all the pointless busywork and filler of Odyssey and Valhalla. At least I think so.

Won't get my hopes up but I'll keep an eye on it.

The size will be key for me, if this smaller world ends up with me finishing it in 50 hours (compared to the 300+ I got out of Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla), I'll end up sitting there thinking "is that it? Is that all there was"

Valhalla was just bloated with copy and paste activities that were mostly average, the story should have ended far sooner too. I’d rather a shorter and more focussed experience. They need a fresh setting too.

Yeah I mean I am a bit unusual because I love the hugeness of it, even with a lot of copy paste. I liked that in The Division and The Division 2 as well and the Ghost Recons. I'm a bit of an oddity in that I like the Ubisoft game model :)

So will wait and see just how much "smaller" is actually "Smaller". It might still be pretty big after all.

Feeling the same. With the last few games they have been moving away from the base story line, which is what initially kept me in the series.

Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, I'm just a bit tired of bloated games and also think the core mechanics the series became known for work better in a dense urban environment. For me, the series has gotten too stale and I'd prefer the return to something more focused. 50h of solid fun would be plenty for me.
If the gameplay loop is tighter and the side content better thought out, I'll gladly take a smaller game but I understand how someone who loved the sheer size of Odyssey might be disappointed.

I wouldn't write it off just yet as I don't think this game will be small TBH, especially since it's Ubisoft. The were banging on about how they streamlined and trimmed Valhalla because of fan feedback and it turned out even more bloated than Odyssey:D How many maps did it have, five, I think?:D

Could get fairly excited for this.

Valhalla was good for the 20 hours or so, the rest was just complete filler. As long as they don't pad a 20 hour story into 60 hours then I'll be happy.

Edit - I'm happy for there to have been 40+ hours of side content, the main story needs to be more streamlined.

Be nice if it was actually about assassins, series feels very diluted after Valhalla.

Tbh, I think this is a major problem with modern games. People have grown to expect hundreds of hours of play time from a single product. If this is really the case, then the developer has to pad out the game with bloat and sacrifice quality over quantity. It must be rare for a typical player to have hundreds of hours of free time to sink into a one single-player title, surely? I couldn't even see myself playing 300 hours total in gaming per year at this stage of my life, and I know I'm not alone...

I start these massive open world games and within a few hours I'm thinking "is riding this horse for 10minutes to get to that copy-paste village really worth my time?". Of course, it never is, so I just give up. The pay off is never worth it.

I've played most of the main release AC games (except Origins and Valhalla, I just got Origins for free so will try it)

I completed everything you could do on all of the them except for Odyssey, which I got bored of and gave up on twice
Its too big, too many busywork type things,
I didn't like the randomness of the loot. like oh i found a sword, is it better than the one i already have? oh another one oh another one etc etc
I didn't like that you couldn't really take on things that were too high a level for you

needs to be smaller, simpler and focus on the story

Ah see now when you reach my time of life you actually have MORE time to game :) , now when I was young I had all the time in the world to game, then marriage comes, kids etc and you dont have as much time to spend gaming but then you reach my stage, where the kids have moved out and its back to just the two of you and suddenly you have just as much spare time as you did when you were young so you've tons of time to game again

I easily do several games a year in which I play over 300 hours, I did over 200 hours each in just AC Origins, Odyssey and Valhalla, I did over 300 hours on Elden Ring, I have over 1000 hours in Civ 6. :)

I like them for the first few hours then get it gets repetitive and I get bored, only recently played Origins and I'm bored of it after a few hours, left it installed in case I want to go back to it but probably won't.

Never bothered with Valhalla, probably won't bother with this unless it's free in the future

Valhalla was greats, its a bit repetitive after a few hours in if you want to complete all the side quest it will take too long to complete.

It looks like they are going back to basics. Looking forwards to see how they will develop it, hope it turn out to be a good game
