Assassins creed

The over arching story has gone out the window along with Ubisoft's share price. Play what you want as Ubisoft does not care.

I had the one on xbox years ago I think it was in Italy, but didnt play it much. After Valhalla released I got that on MM key, really enjoyed that so I got Odyssey for under a tenner and have now completed that too. I have Origins to hit but taking a break from them so you avoid AC burnout.

Seems people have their preference on what version is 'the best' but as long as you get absorbed into the story/environment its a nice game to play.

I would skip AC not because it is absolutely terrible or anything, just that it understandably as the first in the series isn't very refined. So free-running is more clunky, combat is more cheesy, mission variety is lower, there is less freedom on how to approach missions, more riding around between locations etc, a really horrible mechanic to quit to Windows requiring 11 clicks (I guess this doesn't matter on console), annoying sections outside the animus. It's just generally not as fun as some of the later games.

AC2 is fabulous, really strong storyline and locations, with a much smoother parkour experience. Climbing buildings in Roma, Firenze etc is brilliant. Start here and then if you enjoyed it follow with Brotherhood and Revelations (not as good as AC2 imo, but they complete the story arc).

AC3 is pretty mediocre and can be safely skipped. It introduces naval combat, but you may as well be playing Black Flag for that.

AC4 (Black Flag) is good, although perhaps a bit over-hyped. I'd say it's not as good as AC2 but worth playing.

AC Unity I'm playing at the moment. Really good environment, Paris feels absolutely vibrant and full of life, teeming with NPCs. I guess I'm about half way through, there's plenty to do including co-op missions and stuff. I'd say this is underrated perhaps because of some teething problems at launch (I've not had many big glitches).

Haven't played the others yet. In summary I would play in order of release but skip AC and AC3.

Going to start AC Valhalla right now. All I've heard is negative things about it so this is gonna be interesting. :p
It’s decent but it is a slog. Loads of cool things about it just be prepared for 80+ hours if you want to finish the story. Some great characters and environments.

You see, I don't see why this is any different to Odyssey. I just completed that and it was a slog. Exactly 80 hours and I cut it short with one of the mythical bosses to do. People have their preference but all I would change with Valhalla would be sacking off Vinland, shorten asgard/jotunheim worlds and it would have been solid.

Think I finished Odyssey in around 60 hours which is a lot for me to keep me wanting to continue. 80-90 hours I am well burned out.

I played my first PC AC game when they gave away the Unity game after notre-dame fire. Must have got a third way through before I went on to something else. Valhalla was the one that I gave a good chance from the off about a month after it was released and had my new ampere card. Apart from a couple of moments where it could have interrupted momentum I just played more or less every day even if it was a half hour burst and before I knew it was 70% done.

In contrast Odyssey I was sometimes doing an hour and the progress % didn't budge, I reckon by 50 hours I was hoping the ending would be sooner. Now both games had their moments but I think as so many people - even a friend who lives up the road from me - bigged up Odyssey to be "way better" I felt it was not as good. I did play it on hard difficulty first go, and the annoying mercenaries became unrealistic when you have like five of them spoiling your objective from nowhere. There is way more content still to hit in it too but it just didn't capture me compared to Valhalla.

When I completed Valhalla the river raids just released and the extra festivals, these were very meh and I didnt bother with the Druid+Paris expansions, not for that price anyway - which is why I grabbed Odyssey and Origins as they were so cheap.
