Asset management software

The company I work for is looking into using some proper asset management software to track things like software licenses and which departments each PC etc is assigned to.

We've had a play with spiceworks but i think its generally massively clunkly and very sluggish to use even when installed on a brand new server box.

Does any have any suggestions on free / cheap alternatives to spiceworks?

Spiceworks is javascript heavy, have you tried accessing it with Chrome?

I've been using IE8 to access it, does chrome handle it much better?

We use Centennial. It's not cheap but gets the job done. Plus the installation is quite light so you can script it in group policy

Plus you can remove unauthorised applications
