My Sennheiser PC350's that came as part of the Xonar Xense set thing are about knackered now, so I wanted to get a new headset.

I like the look of the Astro A40's, will they work with my sound card, without the mixamp, or is the mixamp required? Obviously I'll want the microphone working too.

It's just for PC use, I'm not too fussed about surround sound so if the worst case scenario is 2.1 sound then that's okay, as long as they sound decent.

You'll need a splitter cable as the mic and headphone cables are combined and your Xonar should handle the surround sound processing the same way id did for the PC350s. However as someone who owns the A40s I don't recommend them, while they are pretty solid the sound quality is awful for the price.

They do seem more hassle than they're worth.

Anything you'd recommend?

The Qpad QH-90's look pretty good and it appears they might be some form of rebranded Beyerdynamic headphones, which is good news if true. They certainly look similar. They have worked with Beyer on the more expensive headset they sell, so the link is there.

I don't think the QH85 and QH90 are rebranded beyers, that was just the QH1339 as far as I know. They're certainly very good headphones you just might want to EQ them a bit depending on what sort of bass response you're looking for; the headphones, particularly the QH85, are brilliant for positional audio in serious gaming but they lose out on that low end as a result.
