GeForce GTX 1080Ti ROG Strix 11264MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card £788.99

GeForce GTX 1080Ti ROG Strix OC 11264MB GDDR5X PCI-Express Graphics Card £809.99

Is it simply the factory overclock? is the PCB/HSF etc... all the same? - i'm thinking of ordering the non OC version.

I paid £698 and was upgraded free to the Gigiabyte 1080 ti Gaming OC (£769) My card has coil whine and it runs hot @ 75C = more fan noise so its going back for a refund.

Wonder if they will let me pay the difference betweeen £769 - £788.

Simply the factory overclock

Basically this. They are the same card but ones that don't pass testing at the higher clocks at stock fan profile are sold cheaper. Ultimately all 1080ti's will OC to around ~2050 it is just a question of what settings you need to adjust or what noise level you are happy with.

Thanks for the insight. I don't understand how that could be true though. It's a 5% overclock and we know that with gpu boost they go much higher, therefore logic would dictate they can all do 5% more ?

I'm not sure exactly what gets a card relegated to non-OC version, but they will have a torture test they run - bearing in mind these things are sold the world over, so what is stable and "not annoying" noise/fan wise in the UK at 20C might not be in 40C 80% humidity.

it could be as simple as this chip does not reach this clock @ this voltage.

everyone knows voltage = increases heat & noise (fans)

It's a simple binning process.

My zotac amp is a 'failed' amp 'extreme'

It's as simple as that. My vanilla amp is also the lowest clocking 1080 I have had (out of four) but it reaches at least 2050 and is the quietestso this time I'm sticking!

the 1080 amp has 2 fans and is 300mm long, the amp extreme has 3 fans and is 345 long - completely different boards and coolers

For the most, it is chip lottery. There will be a couple of cards that bin the chips and I know EVGA will bin chips used in the Kingpin cards but not sure who else does.

Your getting confused. The process of binning only applies to chips and not the pc that they sit on. I am aware of the differences between the pcb 's.

From what i have seen the factory oc ones tend to have higher asic percentages. Thats probably the basis for what they are Binning them on. Thats why ince in a while you will get a high asic core that cant do the factory overclock and is unstable out of the box at stock clocks.

You would be made to pay difference from what you initially paid so 698 to 769 or 788 and if you go refund you would get your 698 back

Haha you would definitely be pushing you luck to expect them to credit you £769 when you paid £698. They only offered the complimentary upgrade to the aftermarket Gigabyte out of courtesy because of making a mistake with the advertised card.

I'm not confused, the OP asked what the difference was between the Strix and Strix OC - with those the boards and coolers are identical, they test them and mark them up accordingly
you've referenced a completely unrelated situation and said that the 1080 amp is just a failed extreme - its a completely different PCB and cooler between the two, not the same situation at all

Cheers for the responses guys.

I think i'll order the non OC version and OC it myself i hope to hit 2000 - 2050hz once i've got the strix i'll post a summary of benchmarking here.
