Hello,

Im having a problem with my Asus 9800 XT. It seems to be running very hot even when nothing it running. When running games like oblivion after while you start seeing clipping. when u put ** hand on the card it is red hot. Tried to install asus smartdoctor but something strange is going on. When i run it i dont get the usual temp and volt diagonistic. Just the overclock bars. im running the latest drivers after a fresh rebuild.

Tried installing the asus enhanced driver - no change.
Tried installing later version of smart doctor - no chance

The card has run fine untill this new rebuild.
no overclock on the card. cant give u temps as i cant get smartD to work. but it must be getting really hot.

other thing ive changed since rebuilding (from default) is the AGP settings. put it on agp x8 but im sure the board and card has this ability

any help welcome

i had one and found out my fans on the card stopped working, went through two with the same fault :(
Might be worth checking...

when I had that card, I was never very happy with the cooling solution either. That big copper cooler looks the part but in reality isn't that great.

How is your case cooling?

Use ATi tool to monitor your temps and to increase fan speed to 100%.
Is the cooler perfectly clean.
I had this card but had an Arctic cooler fitted it's the way to go.

the Asus is not compatible with the artic cooler as i found out when trying to get a quick fix for mine. The Capistors are layed out dif. to a standard 9800xt :(
So it will have to be a new card if it is the cooler... :(

if its anything like my asus x800, you have to install the Asus Enhanced drivers (available on asus website) every time you update the main ati drivers if you want to be able to use the asus special features of the card.

Smartdoctor is very odd in that only a specific version will work with the card. I cant just download and use latest version. Also, the Original Asus bios should still be on the card (so no flashing of faster/newer bioses) for the asus features to be detected correctly.

downloaded and run ati tool. Card is runnign 62 degrees idol...yes i said idol.

fans seem to be working although i have no idea how to check there speed. asus smart doctor is not working. now after installing and uninstalling many diff version it blue screens.

any other tool i can use to monitor fan speeds and increase the fans to 100%??

cheers guys

used the ati tools.. fans are running 100%. this 60 degrees is too hot correct??

any voltages i could check?

edit

the vcore is showing 1.78? is this ok??

60 is to hot if that is at idle but not under load. Voltage is about right.
Have you any arctic silver about. If so a strip down, clean up, AS application and refit can't do no harm.

ok.. took the cooler off.. cleaned it up best i could. cleaned up the 5 chips and the heatsink. put some artic cooler 3 on all the contacts. Now getting 52 degrees idle.

Still seems hot to me. but its an improvement. Also notice when i spun the fans with my finger one of the fans seem stiffer than the other.

Can you get replacement fans for these??? or is there an artic solution for the 9800 xt?

At least we are getting somewhere.
They are good up to say 90c under load but i would aim for mid 70's.
I remember mine sitting quite happily @ 72c during summer.
What is the inside of your tower like. Cluttered or roomey with loads of air flowing through.
In all the cooling mods i have done the one that made most difference cost nothing at all. That was completely tidying away all my cables etc and creating an in through the front out of the back air flow.
I run an X800pro@pe now and my ambient temps are ridiculously low because of my air flow.
Having said that it is louder than my 2000w Turbo Petcare Hoover. :p

I read here once if you can't hear your fans then you haven't clocked it enouth.
Well my neighbours think i am MrClock with what they can hear. :D and they live ten doors down.

I'm a bit late... but I just got one of these with dead fans too. I strapped an 80mm fan on it which seems to work ok, idling at 55 degrees. The copper plate covering the ram gets really hot and I get artefacting at stock speeds. I underclocked it to 400/350 and it seems stable so far.

Can you edit the bios and play around with voltages and things..? I remember doing this with nvidia cards. Any similar ATI utils? Either way, its running a notch or two better than my FX5900 :)
