Hi chaps, so unfortunately I don't have the gift of VM Cable or any BT FTTx products. The best I can get currently is Sky's LLU (ADSL2+) and I get circa 4.5Mb! However I still use an age old Netgear DG834GT with DGTeam firmware.

I'm looking for a new router and seen plenty of good comments on the Asus DSL-Nxx series routers. Although not really seen much particularly on the ADSL router modem they make, the DSL-N55U.

With the latest firmware, is this router modem any good? :) Looking for a new one with a budget approx £100. Needs to be Gigabit, USB ports be a bonus and Wireless N+ is essential.

Cheers

FYI Sky T&Cs state you have to use their router.

Asus kit is good in my experience. I used a WL-500 when I was on cable, the parents still are using it. Solid as a rock that thing.

Pshh, I know that, so what? :p What PC gamer/enthusiast uses an ISP's own router? They are crap! Been using my DG834GT for the last 2+ years with Sky. Their staff don't even care as long as you don't expect support (which I don't).. Haha..

Very tempted to grab the DSL-N55U just want to be confident it will be a solid router and last me years to come!

I do.

DG834GT, then the DG934 after it died. Upgraded to the SR101 this week. I do enough fiddling with networks during the day. I just want something that works and someone else can support. Apart from dodgy uPNP on the 834 they've been fine.

Tried a Draytek for a while. Way more hassle than it was worth.

:P

When I ever do (which is nearly never) need support I just plug in the old Sagem crap they gave me and they never moan.. :)

The DG834GT is still doing me fairly well, I just have a few pet peeves; no Wireless N, slow browsing sometimes and it locks up, can't handle torrents and web browsing and/or gaming at the same time..

Hence I'm tempted to grab the Asus DSL-N55U.. Decisions decisions decisions!

I've just picked one of these up myself and so far I couldn't recommend it.
Main reason is the stock firmware gave me nothing but trouble trying to get it to work. First time I switched it on it automatically sorted my settings out and gave me a connection of 6.5mb (about the highest I can get) but as soon as I tried to change any settings it would just freeze. Every time I tried a hard reset it would force me to input the details manually, but like a true *** I hadn't written them down and had to wait till my phone charged to be able to look them up. Managed to get a new beta firmware installed and since then It's been stable (too early to say about my internet connection).

On the plus side, I now can move files around my network at 100mb instead of 11mb and the wireless strength is a hell of a lot better.

Over all I'd say its worth a punt, but don't expect it to be impressive out of the box. Although there are probably others here who have one and haven't had any issues.

Yeah, I believe those original firmware issues are not just linked to this model and that infact they affected all of their Nxx series routers. I've heard lots of positive feedback on the new firmware with the new GUI, extra features, etc so I was basing my assumption on users with the new firmware. :p

I already self-noted if I get the DSL-N55U; I'll pre-download the latest firmware, flash it as soon as I get it, set it back to factory settings, THEN go to set it up. ;;)

forgot to mention my stock firmware was the latest release version 3.0.0.4.188. Maybe I was unlucky and it was a bad factory install.

But being prepared is a good idea :)

Hey git can you give me a link to the new beta firmware please? I have had a look but the only link i found didnt work! Im also getting this router tomorrow. Much appreciated.

Does anybody know if this router can run wireless G for older devices and wireless N for newer devices at the same time.

My little girl has a HTC Desire that she watches some videos on YouTube, whilst I might want to stream some videos on the Nexus 7.

Thanks, Thomas.

It should I dont know the settings. But I know other router you can select the band. Or leave it on auto and all will connect.

So I caved in and ordered one of these last night.. Hope they are good as they are made out to be!! :p

The stock firmware is criminally poor.

What you should do is unpack it, then use the gui to update it. DO THIS TWICE. don't know why, but it needs it doing twice. (I think something to do with it not doing the adsl driver on the first pass)

Then once it's been done twice, do a hard reset on the back of the router using the reset switch to 'blank' the settings to a new factory default.

Now you're good to go and start using it.

I'd just use the latest beta on their forum, unless they have a very recent one on the support site

Edit, latest beta has gone live as final http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=DSL-N55U&p=11&s=2

Yep, downloaded the latest f/w last night after I ordered it (v3.0.0.4.314). :D

I intended to update the f/w, do a hard reset and run the setup anyway. But I'll update the f/w twice just incase as you suggested. Can't harm it, hopefully! :)

EDIT: Just had my email to say it has been shipped for delivery tomorrow also. :p

If any discs came with it, don't bother using them.

The step-by-step config for setting up your ADSL connection is easy as pie :)

Just plug it in via ethernet, type in 192.168.1.1 in your browser, I think it's admin/admin , then off you go
