Asus EEE Box Desktop PC

anyone tested 720P?, would like to know what its like on this box might buy one for my room to use on my plasma if it's good will try and get one for the lounge tv too.

adriancal

Did it come with an XP recovery CD or is the recovery on a hidden HD partition?
I'm thinking of getting one of these and using Linux on it, but I might have to revert back to XP if I was ever to get rid of it.

They come with two dvd's, a recovery disc with win xp home and a support dvd.
There is also a hidden partition. I now have two of these great little boxes, one is
attached to the back of my lcd in my office which I use as the download pc and the
other is attached to the back of my lcd in the bedroom and is used to stream media files
off my server.

the concept of this is great. just strap it to the back of your tv and never see it again
as a HTPC its mint and im sure you could mod the bracket to house an external dvd or br drive.

also i wonder if it can be overclocked like the eeepc wich would offer abit more performance

Media portal is great, would think it should run on this box, sd quilty video should be fine, have a look at the tv plugin for media portal, looks very good, also tells you what you have watched, and saves your place, perfect if you dip in and out of tv shows

I have the eee pc 901 netbook, which is basically the same hardware as the EEE box (atom cpu 1.6ghz & 945G chipset), but with an added lcd screen and minus the harddrive. I have installed mediaportal on it and I have tried both sd xvid and hd 720p and 1080p .mkvs.

First off, media portal works a treat. No problems, also when streaming from a NAS.

sd xvids also work a treat. No problems.

720p's also work a treat but only when the cpu is overclocked to 1.8ghz and using the h264 decoder coreavc. When using VLC and its internal h264 decoder 720p stutters.

1080p doesnt work.

So my guess is this will be the same for the eee box. IMO it would make a good "bedroom" htpc, maybe running on a small LCD 22" etc.

Or if you dont care about 1080p, could be good in the living room. BTW it also has gigabit ethernet and wireless n. The harddrive is easily replaced for a bigger one as it comes in a slide out rack.

Hmmmm. I might get one.

I can see these things becoming a common place in schools over the next couple of years. The only thing that's stopping me trialling a few in the school is that they will struggle with photoshop CS3 and it is quite heavily used

been thinking of buying one of theses for a downloading/email machine has anyone that has one left it for longer than a week, do these little things get warm or is the fan good enough to just leave and forget it?
