Asus Eee pc desktop

Yeah it'd be perfect for that, or maybe a mac mini if she's into that kind of thing.

ive been toying with that idea for ages i really thought about buying a mac to replace my pc but i would miss the gaming side regardless of my wii and xbox360 and i said to her why dont we buy one but she isnt as enthusiastic about technology as i am so £400-500 on a mac mini (upgrading ram, new keyboard, mouse) doesnt seem like something she would do but this eee box might be what she is looking for. As i mentioned before my only issue is about xp support i thought microsoft had stopped it but surely since these net books are selling they cant bin xp:confused:

Microsoft have extended xp sales for products like this that can't run vista, I think I'll be getting one to use as a music PC in the dinning room as all I want to be able to do is play back MP3's and FLAC files which this will do fine and maybe the occasional episode of the simpsons and some web radio. It's perfect for this role but it is definately a shame that it's not better configured for the HTPC market as it could have cleaned up, lack of audi conections and hardware HD is a bit of an oversight.

Had one for a while now. Handy for flicking on and browsing the web/email and a bit of document editing and printing. I don't use it for much else. All but grinds to a halt when AVG Suite 8 kicks in though. I did upgrade the memory to 2GB, it was a pain to remove the covers to get at the RAM, queue slipped screw driver, removing skin from fingers and lots of swearing, but a definate improvement over the standard 1GB. The wireless is awesome. Supports 802.11n, which I must say is brilliant. Noise is all but non-existant, when powering on, there's the sound of the fan engaging (too be honest, I think it's a fan, I haven't heard any stereotypical fan noises coming from it), but after that only the occasional sound of the platter on the HDD spinning.

Would I recommend one? Yes. If you like SFF and a little something for not much money or with that much POOOWEEER! As guardsmon says, the 330 is out now, might see it make it's way into future versions, so if you want a bit more power, I'd wait for a 330 version.

I have also had one for about a month and am very pleased. I use it in the living room mounted on the back of a 22inch Samsung display. It has replaced our television. It is used for iPlayer, web surfing and playing DVDs with an external DVD.

The only problem I have had with it was when I installed Kaspersky Anti Virus 2009. With iPlayer on high quality streaming, I had all sorts of issues which I put down to either slow connection speeds or poor video performance. However after closing down Kasperski everything was fine. I have since uninstalled Kaspersky and replaced it with Avira Antivir which gives me no problems.

It is extremely quiet. I use a Logitech Air Mouse so I can control everything from the settee:)

All in all I am very pleased.

I have one of these used for general internet use and downloading. I upgraded the Ram to 2gb and installed vista home premium, it runs fine with no problems including aero. For the price its exellent value for money i got mine with a 19" monitor for £260.

what's it like temp wise. i would have thought sticking it on the bk of a monitor it would get hotter as the screen get hot.
What's the idle and load temp? also have tried opening it up?

I dont think it gets that hot at all tbh, Mines on constant and i cant here it the fan never spins up to any sort of audible level. I opened it up to fit the ram which is just removing a cover and a small metal plate, quite a simple process just need to be carefull on the clips holding the side panel on. It uses a heatpipe.

At full load the Cpu temp is showing 48.c mainboard is 50.c and Hdd 42.c, this is downloading whilst playing a 720p video file.

I must say that i have been incredibly immpressed with this little Pc, For doing what it says on the tin its superb. It copes quite happily with vista, tbh honest with the 2gb of ram it seems to run vista better than Xp.
