Asus EEE PC's

I took my daughter to Sta*les yesterday to buy an EeePc 701. The guy said "You do realise this has lie-nux installed on it" ?

I said "Oo BONUS"

We got it home and it was a breeze to setup. Found our wireless connection and connected straight off the bat.

Interface looks nice. Doing what it says on the Tin.
I don't see any bonus to installing a different distro on it. These things aren't built for gaming or deep stuff... So they do what they do pretty well.

Now my two younger daughters want one each

:-(

( My eldest daughter is 20 and paid for it herself)

the default xandros install is fine, but i'm used to using *buntu, so stuck eeeXubuntu on my 701. real easy to set up and there are loads of guides on http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ :D.

I have found it really useful to just take to uni with me and browse the net/do some work. The keyboard gets some taking used to though!

reckon it would run well on an eee 701 ross? the reason i went for eeeXubuntu was because it's a bit more lightweight than other distros
Ah its a 701. Im not so sure. Probably a bit slow on that. I think it would be fine for the other models though.

Ubuntus netbook remix (based on 8.04 currently i think) is amazing. Put it on my acer one instead of customising arch/ubuntu native.

Very well designed for small screens. Bit sluggish to boot but then you can tweak the hell out of it like anything

Ya, i installed that aswell, but had loads of problems getting the wi-fi working. tried ndiswrapper and everything, but couldn't get it going.

My school gives every member of the 6th form an EEEPC. I think its the 701 model. Most people found out how to install the advanced mode, but easy mode was alright i supose.

Ive never used Linux before, so i can't really compare. The advanced mode's easy to get, just press Ctrl-Alt-T to open the terminal, then enter the correct lines of code. :)

So far i haven't had any problems with he laptop, except you could do with an external harddrive as i installed a few new programs (aMSN and Bluefish) and that had filled the laptop up completely. But i didn't know how to remove them so i had Xandros reinstalled on it. :)

And couldn't copy code so broke the boot :p

I put netbook remix on my mums new laptop and she finds it really easy to use, much easier than windows.

And shes useless with computers.

I just got a eeepc 901 there on Thursday and I decided to install ubuntu as I love ubuntu :P. I chose the ubuntu-eee distro and I gotta say it's been excellent! Almost everything worked out of the box. Only problem I had was USB pendrives would not mount but it was solved by simply commenting out the cdrom0 line in fstab. Also the webcam needed enabled in the bios.

Did not like the remix interface on it so I disabled it to get default ubuntu. So now its running perfectly. All this is in documentation on the ubuntu-eee websites wiki.

The battery life on these things are brilliant

Loving my eee pc, i'm going to stay with Xandros.

What repositories are people using with Xandros in advance mode?

I've had a look on the eeeuser wiki and the other couple they recommend, give me errors when i try and reload.

I know someone who ran Xandros on his 70? for a year, he was happy with it.

Harder to install things but the drivers etc. is all set up nicely.

My daughter agrees.
She sez Xandros does everything she wants to do on it.

I'm thinking about installing another distro on either a usb stick/memory card, what distro's is everyone using in this way? Will it work ok without installing on the drives in the netbook?

I have ubuntu-eee on a eeepc 901 and its brill, its now known as easyPeasy and you can get it from here:

http://www.geteasypeasy.com/

It can only be installed over the original xandros I think

Its basically ubuntu with a media like gui, but this theme can be turned off very easily, so you can use the default ubuntu theme, which I like better! :D

I installed it on a pen drive using UNetbootin. I found the easiest method was to download UNetbootin for windows and put the ubuntu image on it.

They have good documentation on their website.

If you decide to give it a try give me a shout and I can give you a text file which I wrote at the time of installing it, that goes through each step and how to fix some wee problems I had.

Strange you mentioned that distro, i've just installed it in a virtual machine this afternoon to have a look :)

It's nice, but i want to keep the Xandros install and have something on usb/memory card.

Any Recommendations?
