Hi Peeps

I have an ASUS FX705DY gaming laptop. This evening when i boot it up it goes to the login page. I enter password and instead of my desktop I get a black screen and the mouse cursor.

I’m at a loss what could cause this. I assume if the hard drive wasn’t connected it would have failed to boot before I reached the login screen. I have restarted several times and shutdown several times but no change.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Maybe a forced update of a graphics card driver?

I assume nothing happens when you CTRL+ALT+DEL or:

"If you experience a black or blank screen on your Windows 10 device, try the following:
  • To wake the screen, use one of the following keyboard shortcuts: Windows logo key + P or Ctrl + Alt + Del.
  • For a black screen, use the following keyboard shortcut: Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B"

Thx. I have fired up in safe mode and windows came up. Now trying a system restore from 2 days ago and fingers crossed.

I’m not very techie these days and it’s first time doing this on Win10 machine plus looking up stuff on phone. Hence forum plea.

I’ll try those out too.

Yeah going to have try that, I did a system restore last night and still have the same problem.

In safe mode I'm getting windows without a background but all the icons are there and start bar comes up. Regular boot I get a black screen and cursor.

So tonight I think it's safe mode with networking and roll back any updates like you suggest. I think there was a fairly chunky update a few days ago so let's hope that is the culprit. I'll check video drivers too.
