Hi guys,

Big dilemma. Need a new router. I can get both of the above for a very good price (under £85).

Which you would buy?

http://www.netgear.co.uk/home/products/networking/wifi-routers/R6250.aspx

http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN66U/

Some key points:

- Want to share a single USB 2.0 Hard Drive over the network
- Only one AC device on the network (MPBr 13) that I'm aware off.
- House is 3 bed semi with brick/old school construction
- Total devices are listed below if it makes a difference:
  • MBPr 13 (AC)
  • HP Laptop (No AC)
  • iPhone 3g
  • Nexus 4 (x2)
  • Nexus 5
  • Samsung S3
  • Sony Bravia TV
  • PS4/PS3
  • Google Chromecast
  • Brother Wired Network Printer
  • Toshiba Laptop (No AC)
  • iPad 3
  • Nexus 7
  • iPod Touch
  • Internet TV Box (Wired)

The main differences I can spot is that one has 2 USB 2.0 vs 1 USB 3.0 and N 450+450 vs AC 300+1300. I know the N66U is good by all the posts on here, but not sure on the Netgear and signal strength etc.

Thanks for all replies in advances.

Regards

Ash

Is there Asus that good for wifi coverage? I know if depends on house design and walls etc but I have a Draytek at home in the living room and I only get 1 maybe 2 bars in the front bedroom, if I want to sit on the iPad and stream something whilst the other half watches her soaps it can be a bit hit and miss

Happy to pay a premium as long as it works well, there are some other Asus models for an extra £20 are they worth it?

Thanks

I have the RT-N66U

It's in my garage with a metal door and solid brick walls. I can still get a small amount of signal in the Chinese takeaway across the road, and along about 8 properties.

Think I need to turn it down a bit!!

N66U has been good for me (once flashed to the Merlin FW - I had some performance issues with the stock asus FW and some people here who do heavy multi connection stuff - refreshing server lists, torrents, etc. which was requiring reboots every couple of days - with the Merlin FW it goes for months fine.)

And are you happy with the coverage

What's your budget?

If you're looking for the best coverage, the N66U will be the best choice out of the AC56U, N56U, and probably anything else in its price range.

The only Asus routers that have equal or better coverage with the N66U are the AC66/68U.

This thread covers it quite well: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18608333

If you want to run various other services on the router (VPN being the most intensive in terms of performance) then you'll want a dual core model (AC56U or AC68U).

Budget would be £100 - £120 and no not planning on running a VPN of anything like that, other than outbound to work, I'm really looking for stability and wireless performance, think the N66U fits the bill and I've found a good deal for one on hotdeals so might grab one this week

Thanks

Anyone know how the 3 year warranty works with Asus, if I was to purchase a second hand unit from the bay (for instance) do they just need a serial number of proof of purchase

Thanks gents

EDIT: Found this on their site

Your sales receipt, showing the date of purchase , is the proof of your purchase date. You may be required by your Purchase Site or Asus Authorized service Providers to present the proof of purchase as a condition of receiving warranty service. You are entitled to a hardware warranty service if a repair is required within the Limited Warranty Period.
