i have recently bought an asus p5k mobo and hadn't properly read up on the raid functions before purchasing.

it seems as though the only way to setup raid is to have one drive connected internally (i.e. direct to the mobo) and the second as an external drive.

is that correct? has anyone tried setting up raid with this board?

That is correct.

The P5K uses the ICH9 chipset not the ICH9R. Hence the 4 sata ports cannot be used for Raid. Only the jmicron controller can, which as you've noticed has one internal port and one external port (eSata). Thus making it nearly pointless.

Sorry not the best news ever I know! (I own one!)

its quite odd when you think about it though, in the past Ive had 6 year old socket A boards that run raid. But still today there are boards that don't run it natively

Even the P5K's with ICH9R SB's still have trouble running raid, maybe buy a dedicated sata controller.

Do they? Mine came yesterday and am happily (although have a 25 second pause at boot up, see my thead ;)) running along fine with...

4 x Hitachi 250GB drives in RAID0 and 2 x Maxtor 160GB drives in RAID0...

Seems fine?

Yup they sure do, fair amount of people have problems when running Seagate and WD raptors in raid on certain P5K boards.
