Asus P5N-E sli would CPU will overclock well with this board?

The 680i is crap with Quads so the 650I will be more so.

Not that crappy. They will run a quad up to 3GHz very well. I ran my power hugry QX6700 in this board for over 12 mths, 24/7 fully loaded, 100% stable, beautifully reliable. About 9 mths at stock 2.66 and 3 months or more at 3Ghz. It's only if you want to go over 3GHz and go to 8GB of RAM that you'd want to change. I wanted to do both, so I did, got the P5Q.

That's nothing, and EVGA did do a new Rev to run Q6600's Asus did not.

The 680I that were not EVGA's new Rev's simply have the wrong SMD's on the Mobo to support the power needs.

The P5N-E Sli does support the 45nm Wolfdales (Dual Cores) however its doesn't support the 45nm Yorkfields (Quads) though it does support the 65nm Kentsfields (Quads)

I have this mobo, and its OC'ed great for me. Had my E6420 2.13Ghz at 3.23Ghz nice and stable on this board. Currently at 2.9Ghz as i've filled all my memory slots up and this board doesn't like that lol

However am getting Vista 64bit Home Prem OEM and then 2*2Gb Memory (G Skills) will then go straight back up too 3.23Ghz then probably get an E8500 and try hit 4Ghz :)

Yes, I still have the P5N-E so I'll likely drop a dual-core CPU of some sort into it and continue to run it. This board tends to get rubbished on these forums, but apart from it's limitations with quads, it's a good board in my opinion, with the recent BIOSs

I was able to get 3.0ghz on stock voltage with my q6600 easily with the a1 revision of the evga 680i. 3.6 when i had an e6600. sadly never got a chance to push the quad any higher due to the memory controller packing in. so ive ordered a p5q. gonna rma the 680i and may keep the replacement to build a new backup rig. always found it a very easy board to overclock with.

so does anybody think that i will have a much better chance of overclocking with a wolfdale 8400 ,8500 than my current Q6600?

Have to agree with you there Tuvoc i've noticed it doesnt get some bad press here lol but im happy with it at the moment. Found it to be a solid board.

To be honest not sure if i'll change until nehalem is out, but i'll see how it goes. May want a quad as am getting into photography a bit, jus recently bought a DSLR :) otherwise i personally have no need for quad and couldnt justify paying out to my gf, bloody mortgage lol

Yes you'll have a much better chance, like i said in previous post, i OC'ed my dual core 1.1Ghz over stock no probs with this board

the only thing im going to miss about having a quad is being able to decode Avi Div x files quick, but im mostly a gamer so im sure i will benefit a bit more with a E8400 or a E8500

The E8400 would serve you well. IMHO there is not much point in paying the extra money for such a small increase in Mhz with a E8500.

True however if he can wait a short while the 8600's will b out and the 8500 is gonna drop in price. And to be honest i'd buy just for the extra .5 multi as im not sure how high i can push the FSB on this board (Same as OP's) and keep it stable.

400Mhz FSB * 9 Multi = 3600Mhz Core Freq

400Mhz FSB * 9.5 Multi = 3800Mhz Core Freq

Most i've had stable was 404FSB however i did boot into windows at 450Mhz FSB but wasn't stable, though i do think this was my CPU limiting me (E6420)

It depends on the differential in the price drop I suppose. If the E8500 drops and the E8400 also drops by a similar amount, IMHO we are still in the same position. Currently on my 780i, I am running at 455 x 9 and it is very stable. The only reason I am not using a higher FSB, is because I dont want to go over 1.34volts.

the 650 is not a good overclocking chipset at all but depending on your budget a e7200/e8200/e8400

Rubbish, my one has an E6300 at 3.35 and thats with 4 sticks of 1gb and Vista 64. To get a decent FSB you have to stick the NB on 1.7V and actively cool the it.

hmmm seems the 8400 has come down, now only costs, £115 incl VAT. 8500 is still around £150.

Think i'll be buying the 84 im sure i can get near 450FSB with this board so will get a high Core Freq :)

My P5N-E SLI managed to take my E4300 up to 3ghz @ 1.38v.

The board does suffer from horrendous FSB holes though. 2.6ghz was stable yet 2.7ghz was not regardless of the voltage / tweaks.

One thing to note if trying to overclock with this board. The NB heatsink gets VERY hot to the touch (it actually burnt my finger). It would be worthwhile either to change the heatsink or sit a 60-80mm fan on top of a graphics card blowing air over it.

I've got a Tbird 900 MHz in a box somewhere that can decode avi divx files quickly...

The 45nm duals work fine in the P5N-E-SLI.
Flash the bios whilst you still have the quad in it and you'll be good to go.
They will overclock quite well.
Ran an e8500 in mine a while back and it clocked over 4Ghz easy enough.

Trying to overclock a Q6000 in one is futile.
Best you'll get is 3Ghz if the wind is in the right direction and the planets are in alignment :)

As as already been mentioned, the NB gets very hot when overclocking with this bored, plus needs lots of NB volts to help with stability (in my case anyway). See if you can replace the heatsink, or get a fan.
