Asus P5N-E upgrade because of RAM issues

I'm currently running an Asus P5N-E with an E6600 CPU. I have 2 X GeIL 1GB 6400 800MHz which has been running fine at 800Mhz but I recently purchased another 2GB and have been struggling to get all 4 modules working at 800Mhz without seriously compromising the system stability. i.e. it gets seriously hot and often blue screens.

I've done some reading about this issue and it seems to be quite a common problem with this mb.

My question is: Will simply upgrading to a newer mb solve my problem or could this also be a ram issue. If its the former then can anyone recommend a decent main board? Something fairly future proof but not too expensive. No more than £150.

hi, *** bios version are you using, i have same mb and ram,, where was a memory hole between 730-830 ish while using 4 sticks of ram, but since upgrading the bios to 0803 ( i think) this was fixed, iam using 0901 ( i think) and have no problems using 4 sticks @800mhz

Thanks. I tried to update my bios last night using the ezflash tool from the bios. Once its finished scanning the new bios .bin it comes up with an error message, something about not being able to downgrade with the current system, or something. Tried to reset the cmos by taking out the battery for a few minutes and tried again but still wouldn't update. Is it because the update gap is so big? Currently on 0401 and trying to get to 0901.

Hmmm that seems a strange msg, as your upgrading ** BIOS. Try perhaps the 0608 or the 0703 i think it is.

Also *** are your voltages set at? i've the same mobo and have recently put in an extra 1gb (512x2) am also using the 2Gb GEIL ULL Kit PC6400 so i have 3Gb total, i was OC'ed to 3.23Ghz DDR808. However now im at 2.9Ghz DDR725. Im running the E6420.

I've not played much yet, will do this weekend hopfully, but im gonna try a few more volts to the DIMM's and NB. Im also looking into cooling the MOSFETS with some Zalman VGA RAM Heatsinks to help stabalise the OC.

To b honest, id play around with the settings in your BIOS 1st before shelling out 150 notes on something u may not need :) Post ** BIOS settings voltages, mem timings etc etc and maybe we can help each other out here :)

To smilertoo;

I didnt think this mobo supported the 1066 memory, PC8500 or whatever it is i assume your talking about? Thought it only supported up to the DDR800 Spec.

hi i just checked iam using bios 0803 atm, i thiught i was on lastest one, but iam not :)
i remember when i first added an extra 2x1gb of ram, pc wouldnt boot at all, just hung at asus flash screen, so i had to go into bios with 2 sticks installed, overclock memory to 830 quit and save, shut down add the extra 2 sticks and reboot, and all was fine, thats was on older bios thou, 0401, i think after 0608 this was fixed, now on 0803 4x1gb running at 800mhz fine
