I am having the most frustrating problem with my new built PC and I could really do with some help:

When I press the power button the system fans start up for around a second and then switch off. Although the Mobo lights remain on, I can get no further reaction out of the PC at all, such as holding the power button on or pressing restart. I then have to switch the PSU off, remove the cable, reconnect and the when I press the power button again it does exactly the same thing.

I don't know where I can go from here, I have disassembled and rebuilt the machine and still the same thing happens.

I must also add that this has happened completely out of the blue, I haven't installed any new hardware/software recently or changed any BIOS settings. I built the PC about a month ago and all the components were brand new.

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great, the spec of the PC are as follows:

P5Q-E Mobo )
Intel Quad Core Q9550
Windows 7 RC x64bit
Asus Nvidia TOP GTX 260
500GB Samsung HD
Antec 900 Case
Antec TruePower 650 PSU
OCZ Platinum 4GB 1066MHz RAM

Thanks

hmm I have a maxuise 2 formular that does this, check the cpu socket if it has bent pins= new mobo as warrenty will not help ;(

this just happened with me recently with a P5Q Deluxe and it was the mobo that was faulty and the lights were still powered on.

First things first is to take all components out and power up the mobo just using the power connectors and see if it beeps at you. If it does put in your cpu then ram etc until you find out your problem.

If its possible see if your friend or someone has something capable of handling your components and put it in and see if it works.

Thanks very much for your help.

So I completely disassembled the PC, set it all out on the bench and started again, just like you advised. Going through all the components one by one, and now it seems to boot up fine. While I was building it up again I reset the CMOS and also removed the battery.

I also noticed that one of the screws holding my Titan heat sink was missing a rubber washer so I replaced that. Im not sure if that has anything to do with it, maybe causing it short out?

Anyway, I am now presented with a problem. I now I have a working PC splayed out all over my work bench. Do you think It may be beneficial putting it all pack in the tower, maybe for the problem to reoccur, just to bring it all back out again. Or should I bite the bullet now and just by a new Mobo?

Thanks

if it fails to beep, and everything looks in order e.g the damm CPU pins are not bent or anything, than feel free to RMA it or buy a new mobo and rma it, than you would have a backup board

I like taking out the memery if no beep=dead board

Increase the voltage to the RAM if it needs 2.1v

It will often work with 1 stick but not with 2 or more.

OPs PC does not post by the looks of it it just powers down again like my backup board did

Sorry, I forgot to say, when I remounted the heatsink I checked the CPU and all the pins looked fine. Although, to be honest I don't think id know what a bent pin looked like. but as far as my untrained eye could see they all looked fine.

As far as the beeps go, iv never had a beep for the mob even when I was building it for the first time. Not sure if thats got anything to do with not having it connected to a speaker, or does the mobo have an onboard one?

one thing that did happen last nightwas when I was rebuilding it on my bench, i fitted the GFX card in the PCI-E slot, but forgot to connect the 2 PCI-E plugs to the card from the power supply. When i then switched it on I got an almighty constant squeal from the system somewhere, would that of been the mobo or the graphics card?

Anyway, I'll boot the system down and remove the ram and see what happens. if it beeps is that a good thing? If it does i'll give it one more chance and fit it all back into the tower. Then if I get even the slightest wiff of anything going wrong again, ill RMA it and buy a replacement.

Thank you

You need a speaker connected on the front panel header pins. Your BIOS bleeps to tell you when things aren't right.

1 short bleep - All OK
1 long bleep and 3 short bleeps - no graphics card
3 short bleeps, repeating - no RAM
etc.

Once you need the bleeps for your motherboard, it's easy.

And the squealing was the graphics card although mine all have little LEDs on that glow RED for insufficient power and green for sufficient power.

Plug in your speakers. Modern motherboard (Asus ones esp) will announce what is wrong

Even if there is no RAM or graphics in the PC? That'd be a neat trick if it worked. My P6T certainly doesn't do that!

yes thats how I sorted out my rampage didn't work with my maximuse 2 formular through :(

Is the case power switch sticking? If it was it would give exactly the symptoms described. The system would work fine out of the case but if you hooked it up to the mains switch it would start to boot, but it would then immediately shut down as it thinks you're holding the power button down.

It could be worth checking. It would certainly explain why it worked before and then doesn't, yet it boots fine out of the case.
