ASUS P5Q pro and memory choice

Hi

Thinking of buying an ASUS P5Q pro motherboard and just had a look at ASUS's web site to see what their recommended memory was and there doesn't appear to be many 4GB kits on the list!

Was thinking of either:
1) Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX ... or
2) Crucial Ballistix Tracer RED 4GB

I've had a quick search of the forum and the only problems I've seen have been with some configurations of OCZ memory (mainly with 8GB).

Or is it a matter that pretty much anything "should" be OK.

Any comments / suggestions?

Thanks.

There are loads of 4GB kits on the list, at least for the P5Q Deluxe - and that must surely be the same list

Nope... The pro (strange as it seems) appears to have a different list. Much shorter one than the Deluxe (which I did not think to look at until you mentioned it).

I didn't see that RAM on the QVL list - are you sure it is the same stuff ?
Just because 4GB works no guarantee 8GB will. Anyway, yours is the DDR2-800 stuff. I reckon the board doesn't like DDR2-667 in this variety

This mem is the same as the Platinum memory on the list but the cheaper binned ones.

OK - I wonder about the DDR2-667 Dual Channel Vista Upgrade Gold Series then - it definitely won't work with 8GB. And I kind of thought in the Vista Upgrade Gold Series, the 667 and 800 would be the same chips but binned. Hmm...

Well i'm on about the difference between:-
Gold Series 5-5-5-18 which is at 1.9v and is only £58.74 for 4GB

Platinum Series 5-4-4-18 which is at 2.1v

Both of which run at 800Mhz.

If you look at the QVL on Asus's site OCZ have no memory listed on the DDR2-667 list.

Yes that's right

Thing with these QVL list is - if your memory isn't on there, you don't know if it is because they just haven't tested it at all, OR if they have tested it and it doesn't work... Anyway the 8GB of Corsair that I bought that is on the QVL list works like a charm :)

I may well be going mad here, but I can't see that memory on the QVL list!
Only one I can see is: CH2X1024-640C4
or is it the same stuff.

PS. Please excuse my ignorance here.

Got it...

Depending if you look at the Uk, or Global site, you get a different list!

Looks like the UK site is an earlier version of the list.
