I would like to know which will be the better 6.0gb/s X58 motherboard please. The only thing I can see good about the Gigabyte one is that it has the optional water cooling for the northbridge but I am not sure if the Asus would be the better route.

The motherboard will be matched with an i7 930, 6gb Corsair XMS3 and x2 Asus 5850's.

You could do what I am doing and wait until the Rampage 3 extreme. It will cost you a little more, but it should be a more 'mature' board. The UD7 was rushed slightly so they could be 'first' with the USB 3.0/SATA 3.0 mobo. As for the ASUS P6X58D, it has some strange limitations such as high speed DDR3 for only 3 channels at once, no E-Sata, etc. Best bet is to wait for the Rampage 3. It shouldn't be undercut on anything and should be quite a mature and long lasting board.

just a heads up for you concerning the asus P6X58D and the core i7 930 i have just got these and when i put in the core i7 930 it would not work because the bios was to old! it was a good job i had a core i7 950 so i put that one in to flash the bios and then i put the core i7 930 back in than it worked so if have not got another older core i7 i would go with the core i7 920/950

no E-Sata
VortX it has esata on a bracket that comes in the motherboard box and conects to the sata port!

That makes a lot of sense. I think I will do the same then because I dont want an unreliable mobo for that type of price ;)

Thanks.

I have an i7 920 in my Acer Aspire M7721.

Duh! Realise that now :p *slaps self* However, I don't like the little PCI bracket plate things, better to have it built in, which the Rampage 3 has. :)

EDIT: The Rampage 3 better have native 930 support or I will scream when I get mine lol.

The Gigabyte offers RAID on the SATA 3 controller which the ASUS doesn’t. I didn’t need the IDE/Floppy support or SATA 3 RAID and preferred the layout on the ASUS. I like the ASUS bios and features so that’s what I went for.

It’s currently running:

Intel Core i7 930 @ 3.60Ghz without trying.
Bios 0703 loaded in a few minutes during build using EZ Flash.
Kingston HyperX @ 2000MHz
Crucial C300 256GB SSD with Windows 7 on Marvell SATA 3 controller
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
XFX Radeon HD5850
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium - Fatal1ty Champion in PCI-e slot

Highly recommended.

Asus P6X58D

Hi Guys,

If I buy Asus P6X58D and an i7 930 and the bios does not support the 930 is there a way to upgrade the bios or is it an RMA job?

Cheers

hi kevin
what i would do is phone overclockers to see if they would do a bios flash for you or go to your local shop to see if they will flash the motherboard for you or buy a core i7 920:)

It supports i7 930 from bios 0402 onwards so as Geek says ring up Ocuk and ask if they know what bios it ships with.

I got mine a week ago with an i7 930 and it booted into the bios without a problem before I installed windows.

Flashing the bois is easy with this board. Just copy the new bios to a usb drive, alt +f2 on boot and the bios (EZ Flash ) gives you an option to load the new bios. It’s as simple as that.

Cheers that has sorted all of my worries if I end up buying one of these. But I will still wait for the Rampage 3 to see what it has to offer.
